Speedo & cruise control not working.

I've got a NT auto diesel and the speedometer has died, along with the cruise control at around the same time.

Initially the cruise control was "surging", but within a few days it failed altogether. Around the same time the speedo was giving a reading about 5kph lower than usual, as measured against the Sat Nav. A couple of days later, the speedo was extremely erratic for a little while, sometimes showing a speed of up to 120kmh when I was only crawling along. By the end of that day I had no speedo and no cruise control.

I have read through some other threads on this problem relating to earlier models, but I couldn't find anything for the NT with the Aisin transmission. From those threads it seems that the cruise control functions from the speedo, so if the speedo fails then it follows as a matter of course the cruise control will not work.

Can anyone tell me is it more likely to be the sender unit in the transmission, or the receiver behind the speedo? In either situation, how can I check the component without having to go to Mitsubishi to be charged $150 just to have a look? If it's more likely behind the speedo, how do I remove it?

The vehicle is a 2010 build and has done 150,000 kms. I've looked underneath and there is no obvious signs of damage, although I wasn't expecting this anyway.

    Hoping someone can help. Cheers.

Original MMCS or aftermarket stereo installed?

If it is original MMCS, any issues?

Reason I ask is that people who exchange there MMCS units for after market stereos have reported that the have lost the speedo. It may be worth pulling the MMCS out and seeing if any wires are damaged.

The other thing is; have you had the recall done on the indicators; that may be an issue.

I had no cruise and speedo due the the speed sensor being earthed when I installed my aftermarket stereo.

Not sure if there is a speed sensor fuse (check manual). No idea how to check the speed sensor.

The stereo unit is the standard Mitsubishi unit; no inbuilt reversing camera, or sat Nav. I have had the car since 10 mths old and the stereo has not been taken out.

When I referred to referencing the speed against the sat Nav, I am using a stick on the windscreen type of sat Nav .

I took it in for a jammed indicator replacement about a year ago under warranty, which was prior to the recall. I took it back about 2 months ago to be checked under the recall.

It's now out of warranty, hence I'm seeking help here.

The only other dashboard issues I've had is that the compass doesn't work. I've done the drive around in circles reset, but it only seems to last a few days. I can't really see how that would be related though. (By the way, that happened 10 days out of warranty and Mitsubishi said "bad luck, can't help. " God bless them!

The only help I got from Mitsubishi on the speedo issue is that they've sold the odd sender units , but no speedo cluster units, suggesting it's the transmission sender unit, not the speedometer end.

This issue occurred over a period of about a week, so I can't see it being a fuse because it would have just instantly failed.
Thanks for your interest and help so far, looking forward to your reply

In that case see if you can locate the plug for the transmission speed sensor or what ever may be called , check the Russian workshop manual website.

          Plug could be loose

                    Speed sensors

It would seem there are 6 speed sensors on the Pajero. One on every wheel , on the tailshaft and even on the transfer/ auto case too . You will need to check that none of the wires to these sensors are not damaged.

                      Update on Speedo Problem

Many thanks for the link to that website. It's extremely comprehensive and I will keep it for future reference.

Over the period of a week or so the speedo & cruise control failed, engine warning light came on and centre diff light came on. Fearing the entire car was going into meltdown whilst I am on an extended touring holiday of Australia, I took it into DJ Motors Mitsubishi in Hobart, Tasmania and they were awesome. In short, they plugged into their scan tool and said the root cause is the speed sensor located at the back of the transmission. They said once I replace that, everything else may be OK because all those other functions are dependent on speed for their calculations.

By the way, they didn't charge me for checking it out!

I can't do much about it for a week or so, but I will post the outcome in due course. Thanks for the various assistance to date.

Many thanks for the various suggestions. Here is the outcome: The problem was finally diagnosed as a damaged vehicle speed sensor and also a damaged rear output shaft speed sensor. Both of these sensors were damaged from inside the Transfer Case.

Both of these sensors are bolted on at the back of the Transfer Case, just in front of where the rear tail drive shaft connects. The sensors are a conventional magnetic induction pickup from a tone wheel inside the rear of the Transfer Case. (ie, the same principal as to how your ABS sensors work on the wheels.)

The car ended up in a transmission specialist because I was concerned about what was flying around inside the Transfer Case to cause this damage, and potentially more damage. The root cause was identified as a sort of "C" clip that holds the tone wheel in place had come adrift from where it should snuggly fit and shrapnel had flown around and done some damage. The transmission specialist along with a few Mitsubishi dealers I had spoken to in the process had never seen this before, commenting that these transmissions are near on bullet proof.

It seems that this problem is rare, but in can occur.

In response to the suggestion by Reefmaster that it may be the sensors on the wheels, this was not the case. The sensors you refer to on the wheels are only for the ABS and ESC, so if it was those sensors, their respective warning lights would have come up on the dashboard.

Your suggestion was appreciated, and I did address that with Mitsubishi and they gave me the answer, as above.

                        Cheers.

                          Cost of repairs?

                          Hi Gordon,

Did this repair cost a lot ?

And is the car running fine now?

I was a couple of months outside of the 5 year warranty, and because I was not the original owner of the car, I don't qualify for the extended drive train warranty of 10 years. Total cost about $800.00; ahh well, could have been much worse.

Hoping this is of some assistance to some one else out there.

                            Cheers.

It happened in my NS as well, cruise went first then a few days later speedo went.

I had some more dramas as the active DPF in the NS relies on the km travelled for burns to complete.
