Hopefully, by checking the terminal connection, this may disturb the high resistance (if any) and the problem will go away. Whilst there, he may as well check the resistance of the sensor as well (if he has the equipment and knowledge to do so).

I think what you mean is that the wiring loom plug is still attached to the sensor. Original post said to remove it, and that would mean there is no voltage going into the sensor and why everyone said above that the sensor doesn't produce voltage
What this measures is ohms law. Change in resistance is just giving a change in voltage measure across sensor and the current moving through. I just think measuring resistance is simpler as you just unplug the wiring and probe each side

Let’s be specific - it’s a change in earthing, thus allowing more voltage through the system, where the temp gauge responds as it’s designed to (until it doesn’t...)
Any resistance that’s extra above the design will show a low temp gauge reading if that’s the way it’s designed.
Usually if you remove the temp sensor wire and place it on the block the gauge will go to red, even if the engine is stone cold.
