    OBDII readings and Fuel Consumption

We bought our NS (2008 / 153k kms) about 6 weeks ago and on the whole we're really pleased, however our fuel consumption running errands around our neighborhood is in the 16l/100kms range. Which is much more than I'd expected.

I have read all of the advice on the inlet manifold cleaning etc, however I was wondering if I could use the OBD II output by way of diagnosis before I take the car off the road to pull it apart (which I will do eventually)

I took delivery of my cheapo ELM32 reader and headed out with my daughters Nexus Android tablet with Torque installed. A few things have become quickly apparent.
    1. The Throttle dial is generally at 100% but intermittently springs in to life (even when revs and other dials are reading OK).
    2. The boost has been swinging between +16 and -16 and regularly has negative readings in the order of -7.
3 The connection drops out a fair bit (which I understand is a function of my cheapo ELM32 reader).
4 No error codes are showing (not withstanding the one I seem to have self triggered as per below)

Other things that I found out were that for motorway driving the fuel consumption dropped to around 10l/100km (I reset once I got on the m/way). Also I got error P1901 as soon as I got off the motorway and the auto box started behaving like it had no clutch - a real kick in the pants with every ear change - this cleared as soon as I restarted and the error cleared at the end of the day. I understand this is a self triggered fault resulting from the OBDII.

Today's jobs are Oil and Filter, Air and Fuel Filter (and a new pollen filter) but I can't help thinking that the readings I'm seeing as detailed above are indicative of something. This is my first turbo diesel and technology has moved on considerably from the 1.8l Ford Escort diesels I used to own (5l/100km I've just worked out) - so I'm in need of a bit of help. Although I'm not sure I can fully rule out a defective ELM32 reader.

    All advice gratefully received.

    Regards

Are you taking your fuel consumption from the factory guage on top of centre dash? If so it can be a little misleading as starts high and drop as it averages out over time. ie mine when I hop in my car in the morning it reads around 20L/hundred but in after driving for a length of time the reading will drop. In real terms going by actual odo kms travelled and how much fuel I have to fill I get about 11Litres/100km on average, high way I can get down to 9.5L/100km

Do a real calculation From the odometer to how much fuel you put in when you fill.
      Have you got standard tyres?

I'm on LT/AT tyres but standard size.

I am referring to the dash board fuel consumption. I have noticed that it goes through the roof at start up so I usually give it 5 minutes and then reset it. So these values are excluding the start up period.

I haven't been able to measure the fuel by the oedo yet as my wife (almost astoundingly) has filled it up twice without prompting and she is struggling to get it full I think due to foaming at the pump.

what sort of "errands around the neighbour hood" If you are talking short runs with lotsa stop starts 16 l 100 is what the dash readout will say.It prolly takes AT LEAST 5 minutes maybe 10 minutes for the dash readout to settle down

Point taken - but I'm regularly resetting 5-10 mins in to see if I can get it down to the figures everyone else talks about. As a guide - from filled up to fuel light (so not an actual number) on we got about 570kms.

If this is normal I'll stop worrying about it.

            Cheers
