    Which antenna?

    Howdy,

since I bought a bullbar I decided to get a decent antenna for the front to replace my old GME.

Im currently looking at either GME's high performance range AE4702 or AE4703 OR RFI CD5000.

All three of them have same gain of 4.5dB, the only difference is the length.

Main use is going to be hilly area or highway.

    Which way to go?

    Cheers.

I have similar from GME (6.5db) but once in a forest i cant get good coverage, thats why im looking at something "bigger". Within 5 cars and the last two struggled to hear me.

Thanks anyway, I know that for general use this pack is awesome.

        UHF Antenna

I've got the ZCG Scalar ZN3-77-11 and the stubby ZN3-77-04-TP.

I use the stubby antenna around town so I don't have to worry about shopping centre carparks. Both antennas are on this page:

From my experience you can get around 3 Km in the bush around the Murray river before it starts breaking up.

Didn't really consider ZCG antennas, might have a look at them. Though with minimum clearance of 2.2m atm I can't fit most car parks anyway. The AE4702 is similar package, removable which can be replaced as it has the SO239 connector. Thanks

I have the AE4702 or 4703, cant recall which one atm. I also got a ground plane independant adaptor from prestige that allows me to fit a 1/4 wave for tight bush work. Seems to work well for me.

Run the benelec version of that, keep the 6.5db one on regardless, on a good day, Wedge to wanneroo transmiting distance but generally out bush about 8-10km

In UHF bigger isn't actually better. 477mhz has a full wavelength of 62.8cm which is the theoretical best length of aerial to use. I'd love to cut one of those monster white poles open - I'd bet they have a 62.8cm bit of wire inside them. If it's going on the bullbar it's more important that you are running the right base - an elevated feed or ground independent.

Personally I like the RFI range and use the simple steel centre loaded whip on an elevated feed. RFI make specialist antennas for the big end of town - whenever you see a big antennae stack on a mountain or building somewhere you can bet that some of their product is up there. They are also one of the few manufacturers to publish full performance specs, and they are an australian company.

Those monster antennas are collinear, so even though ur probably right, they still perform better.

I use a Faze 4 UHF (6dB) monopole, on an independant ground plane.

Gets me heaps better distance than the standard whip....
