thanks for all the replies so far OJ & others, it's been appreciated.
That's correct OJ, there is no check engine light. It comes on with the reds and then goes out with everything else. I also tend to think there's water/crud in the intercooler. I'm going to remove it and clean it, it can't hurt and could save me some serious $$

No problem with the assitance, we will all learn from this. Once the intercooler is out I suggest you fill it with either diesel or kero and let is sit for 30 minutes the drain and put in the sun to dry for another 30 minutes before refitting. You will be surprised at what colour the diesel/kero will come out at! OJ.

Update, she's cooked! Mud and water through intercooler and piping straight into throttle body. She started getting very hard to start and blowing loads of smoke.
I lodged a claim with my insurer and the repairer confirmed it's a write off. I've already bought a replacement challenger and this one is being picked up by the insurer today. Thanks for all your help guys.

Hi Bren, Not good news about the ingestion of dirty water, but at least insurance is covering the cost. The big worry is how this happened since you a snorkel fitted! OJ.

You seem to have a reasonably nice amount of accessories - have you attempted to track what happens to your wreck, see if you can get (buy?) any of them back somewhere along the line?

yeah I chose this insurer due to no offroad exclusions, also I work in insurance, I just didn't want the car to be a write off unnecessarily.
To answer your questions re. accessories, I landed on my feet by picking up a 2011 30th anniversary model that only has 124k on the clock and just had a major service including timing belt, valve adjustment and manifold clean that was a country car from Inverell, it already had an alloy bulbar and towbar fitted. I had cash in savings so was able to snap it up straight away. I had all the accessories swapped this week, had to move quick once I knew the car was being written off the insurance company doesn't muck around grabbing the old one. I was going to put in a tender for the salvage but realistically there's not anything else on it i'd use.

I know I'm late on the page here but I might have a clue as to how water, dust, or fine mud has entered to motor. I did a MAF sensor clean last week and noticed that the unit itself wasn't very secure even though the screws were tight.
Once removed, I noticed a bit of fine dust just inside the hole where the sensor fits. I had a look at the sensor itself and noticed dust sitting on the o'ring. The reason the sensor felt a bit loose was because the o'ring was past it's best. Bugger! So while I cleaned the sensor I also replaced the o'ring. I also took the liberty of smearing some sensor safe high temp silicon on the new o'ring as well, just to be sure. The MAF sensor is now fitting tight onto/into the airbox. Give it a check people! |
