Default Roof Cargo Box Vs Roof Basket

Hi how are we all. I am in the market for a roof box or a roof basket. I just want to know what people thoughts and experience from people who either own a roof box or a roof basket and the pros and cons.

If you can include brands it would be appreciated. Will be mainly used for storing stuff on long distance trips mainly clothes and kids stuff.

Any information appreciated

Anhie,
I have used a roof box for about 9 years. It has stood up to the tanimi road, gibb river road as well as cape york.
Ours was not one of the top brands like thule so moisture would get in occasionaly so clothes were put in plastic bags. Hardley any dust got in, found they were easy to use.
Good luck with your choice.
Greg

I sold my 450litre cargo box and went with a Rhino Medium Roof Top Bag. The Cargo box was a pain to close when fully packed although it worked well prior to fitting my roofrack. The Bag is a better shape for me now that we have the full length alloy rack, I don't open it right up, I just open one end and stuff my chairs, self inflating beds, Malamoo tent, and blankets etc in there.

The rhino bags are well made with a double sealing Velcro strip and zip, no dust etc gets in. I went with the medium size so I can still fit my 2nd spare wheel, Treds, Gas bottle and a Single Jerry on the roof.

Hi Anhie,

I am also interested in the responses here. Do you have the standard roof rails and what bars do you have attached?

Cheers,
James

Hi anhie, I have both a roof box and a rhino roof basket. The roof box was bought from a roof rack specialist firm here in Adelaide and is a good brand. I just went to the shed to check the brand and i can't see it. It is well made though. I have used it for several years and found it waterproof and excellent for soft packings i.e. clothes, bedding etc. Like another post here I found it awkward to close when full and sometimes difficult to pack as the hinges don't allow it to fully open. I have a Rhino roof basket as well which I bought last year as I needed to carry a second spare and other large items for off roading which wouldn't fit in the cargo box. I still plan to use both for different purposes. i.e. cargo box -cruising on highways where 2nd spare and other hard items don't need to be carried. roof basket for off road use. If I had my time again and had to choose one I would go for the basket and luggage bag ( as another post has mentioned) only as It is more versatile and could meet both requirements for me. i have the standard Mitsubishi roof bars on my roof rails. I think they are Rhino aero bars just re branded with the Mitsi label.Hope this helps.
Cheers
Alan

I removed the factory rails and replaced them with a Rhino HD track system. I have no cross bars as I have a custom made Alloy Basket fitted that sits pretty close to the roof. It's a pain to remove though and lives there permanently.
I had it manufactured by Midland Marine over here in Perth. When I had the roof pod, it was sitting on HD Rhino cross bars and the factory rails.

A couple of pics below, to give you an idea. We did 7500km's with the Pod out to Uluru/Dalhousie etc and no dust or rain inside at all.

I've raised it slightly at the front since this pic was taken, to give me more room for the lightbar.

I had a Rhino roof basket and crossbars from my previous 4WD ( a Patrol ) so that is what I went with, swapping the Patrol gutter mount legs for the Rhino roof rail gripping legs. I have used a roof bag in the past.

My thoughts on these things:
1) The cheap eBay sourced roof bag was great for about three years of almost constant use when we were travelling, but once the plastic film (inside the bag) started to deteriorate it went leaky and downhill very fast. Horses for sourses – if you want it to last get a good one.
2) Roof basket vs roof pod – I have always used the roof basket to carry the firewood we find as we travel around the tracks. The wood gets chucked on the roof (usually on top of the roof bag) and bungeed down until we get back to camp. Hmmm – maybe that practice was something that helped with the deterioration of my roof bag? Anyway, you can’t do that with a roof pod so if impromptu carrying of loads like firewood is important get a roof rack/basket. If not then a pod may suit you better.
3) Roof rails on the Pajero. What a waste of time they are – form over function rubbish that doesn’t convince me that they can carry any weight at all. I will be binning mine and going for the roof tracks from Rhino.

Hope that helps a little. I suppose that, apart from my rant about the pathetic design of those roof rails, I am just pointing out that a roof basket and bag is a more flexible choice. I’d only consider a roof pod if I knew I was never going to need to carry anything but the sleeping bags, clothes etc that I could stuff in there.

I had a long narrow basket next to a long pod. soft stuff in the pod, hard stuff in the basket and a solar panel. Worked reasonably well, although the pod hinges failed and it was hard to get the pod shut (overstuffing?).

As someone else mentioned, roof bags wear through eventually but after having a bag prior to the pod, I am going to go back to the bag as it works best for me .
