Default NJ Pajero 3L V6 Auto Skips Past 2nd Gear

It's been like this ever since I bought it... My NJ Pajero 3L V6 Auto skips past 2nd gear. It's like it's quite happy to go from first straight to third with no want to try to find second gear. It kicks down from third to first with no signs of second gear for the past six months or 5000km+. I have replaced the trans fluid and filter.

The torque converter locks up fine when flooring it from idle.
It changes from 1st to 3rd perfectly fine.

Any recommendations? From a few diagrams I've looked at I am thinking maybe the valve body is responsible for this? Perhaps the 1-2 shift valve isn't working? I'm not sure on how auto transmissions work internally as I haven't done much work with them as I have always had manuals or replaced the complete engine and box in auto transmission vehicles I've had.

I am wanting to buy a spare motor and gearbox to put in this car at a later date which I can rebuild over the next couple months so I am happy to put up with it for now since I'm only ever cruising on the highway in overdrive to a location or revving its box off in low range in first gear =)

I have spent nights and nights of googling and I can't see anything that is similar to this. Lots of not being able to shift into second and up but nothing like this.

This is the first time I have ever heard of this kind of problem.
I don't mean anything by this but are you sure it is 3rd it is going into?
The rev drop of 1st to 3rd would make it almost undriveable.
Could it be that you have lost O/D and it is acting as a 3 speed box?
With the O/D OFF does it only have two forward ratios?
?????

Trust me it's going 1st to 3rd!

I can sit on 110km/hr in OD. I can drive at 60km/hr and then click OD off and go back to third. It's just like there is no second gear.

It's been a while since I drove it and paid attention but Im pretty sure I am sitting on just over 2200rpm or something at about 80km/hr, just under 3k rpm at 110km/hr - definitely in OD with these revs and speeds.

have you got the hold switch pressed, this locks out low and gives you 2, 3 and od only.

car will in most instances comfortably take off in 2nd.

I can get on the brake in a donut in first gear... pajero v6 3L auto will have a tough time in second gear doing a donut on the road with 31's...

I know it's first, third and OD.

isn,t your model a 3 speed auto ? if so your gears will be correct as OD is top gear.

Three speed auto with overdrive.

It goes from first to third then into overdrive. I understand you have to ask the most obvious questions but I know what I am talking about when I say it's going straight past second gear. And yes it's a piece of crap to drive from first to third, but it has quite a low ratio so revving the box off first then letting third engage nicely before putting your foot into it makes it acceptable to drive for now.

that only leaves a blocked valve assembly which normally means a rebuild.
