Default Trailer plug wiring

G'day,
I have had a plug added to my 2008 NS Pajero for the tow bar I fitted.
I talking to my auto elec to have the 12 pin plug fitted as I am towing a van.
I asked about the ECU unit, and he seems this think it will not be needed as the van has LED lights and they do not draw much power.
I can not find any info on why you need the ECU for a trailer plug. Is it just an easier way to wire the plug in, or does it do more?
Thanks,
Andrew.

MMAL uses the ECU (a box full of relays, etc.) as the Canbus wiring system in the Gen 4 does not like the extra load of trailer lights (unsure if it overloads it or just upsets the cars ECU). Every time I look at wiring in the Gen 4 I can't believe how light weight it is - presumably the Canbus system allows them to use thinner wiring?

No idea if it can handle the extra (but lower) power requirements for LEDs in the trailer, but what happens if/when someone plugs in a different trailer with normal lamps? If you go down this path, some sort of warning needs to be put on it not to use a trailer with incandescent globes.

Bought the kit today so will have a look at fitting it over Australia day weekend.
Any tips or tricks when fitting?
Cheers,
Andrew.

If planning to add a brake controller, run the wires through at the same time.

Put the trailer base/socket on top of the metal bracket on the towbar (instead of under it per the instructions), as this helps to protect it off road.
