Red face Help: could it be my injector pump

NP 04 DID 393000KM
Driving at 100k engine shuddered, check engine light came on, huge amount of black smoke from exhaust, rolled to a stop?
Can anyone recommend mechanic in Perth?

Thanks in advance

You are in the zone where that could be a possibility.
Have also seen on this site that Fremantle Diesel has had some experience with these pumps on your side of the country.

Let us know the outcome.

Hi mate,

I suppose the life of these pumps is a bit like ‘how long is a piece of string?’ If your vehicle has the original pump intact from new, it has done pretty well to get to almost 400,000km. – mine didn’t quite reach 300,000km. If you bought the vehicle second hand there is the possibility the pump has already been reconditioned or replaced – however, you never know.

Cheers
Geoff

Ok so looks like the turbo has failed (broken shaft) allowing oil to flow into combustion chamber?

A question I have is, would the engine run on if oil was flowing in?

Cheers

Your not thinking of driving it with a broken turbo shaft are you? (I’m usually up for some‘creativity’ but I don’t think that’s a great plan.

Short answer is yes, it's possible to get run-on if any oil can be ingested through the inlet tract. In extreme cases the engine can runaway with catastrophic results.

No I'm not going to drive it
And just trying to understand the diagnosis as the engine did not run on I shut it down by the key?

Yes it can continue to run with oil leaking in via the turbo. How much oil will determine if it will run or run away or just shut down when you want it to.

Was there any compressor vein debris ingested by the engine? That could lead to other issues if the compressor wheel is damaged.

Hopefully it’s just a turbo replacement you require.

Also find out why the shaft snapped - lack of oil to the turbo? Blown oil seal reducing oil pressure on the turbo shaft?

You don’t want to replace a dead turbo and have the same result reoccur!

Cheers

Bennie
