    Clicking from center/rear of car.

    Hi All,

    I'm calling on the knowledge group for a problem that has developed over the last couple of months.

    2011 NT Pajero, 150,000km with 2 inch lift (installed 2 years ago)

    I have a clicking sound coming from the center/rear of my vehicle under certain circumstances.

    The sound is almost identical to a buggered CV joint on a front wheel drive vehicle under full lock.......a repetitive click click click sound.

    It only does it when I am accelerating and either:

    -turning left regardless of angle of turn (could be gentle or hard turning)
    -when the drivers side of the vehicle dips (divot in the road) when additional weight is put on the drivers side of the vehicle.

    Initially I thought rear driveshaft fault but this has now been ruled out.

    I have noticed if I shift to 4H the clicking is not nearly as bad as if some of the strain has been removed from the rear end.

    It does not do it at all if driving backwards, or if I am coasting.

    I'm hoping someone can shed some light on the issue?

    Just a couple I can think of.

    1) A stone stuck in wheel tread.

    2) Maybe worn uni joint

    3) Rear CV joint(s)
    NS SWB X 3.2DiD - Factory locker, Hella spotties, GME UHF, 2" lift

      Definitely not a stone stuck in the thread, it had a tire rotation less than 2 weeks ago (Broke another wheel stud........this seems to be a common issue with my rig)

      Not driveshafts, have had these checked and they are all OK

      Going to check on uni joint, and try torquing up the LHS hub nut which seems to be a common issue as well.

      However the more I listen the more I am convinced it is something to do with the prop shaft / transfer case when the rear diff is put under pressure on the drivers side.

      I'll check diff mounts as well.

      I've also noted the other day when it was up on the hoist that the passenger rear wheel hung lower than the drivers side.

      I Think this may need further investigation too...

          I have seen a few with rear driveshaft nuts loose, and some with rust in the splines causing knocking. If the nut is tight, loosen it and check if you can move shaft in and out. If not, WD40 the hell out of it till it does move freely , then retorque nut.

            I have recently tightened it which fixed the clunk but now it clicks and clunks. I'll try what you suggest and apply thread lock this time.

              @DibbyDibbyDJ I did it today and no more clunking!

              I understand what you mean by rust and WD40 the shit out of it because when tightening the nut it moved in tighter as it's all clean to move.

              Bad thing is I put everything back and realised I had forgotten to pop back the dust cover, how important is this piece?

                . Dont get many of them doing that , but have seen it enough times to remember. i have heard of people wanting to change shafts and diffs because of that noise.


                It is worth putting the cap back on, you dont want water or dirt getting into the shaft splines.

                  It is worth putting the cap back on, you dont want water or dirt getting into the shaft splines.
                  My front CVs are clicking also but no signs of tears on the boots, I'll try cleaning the splines and see if it helps before replacing them.
