Search string 4 character minimum limitation

    Hi

A couple of times I've been caught by the minimum 4 characters for a search limitation.
    Today: LSD (diff)
Couple of days ago: OME (shocks)

I tried padding with a space, but it is smarter than that.

Is there a wild card or something to get around this limitation? Or could it be reduced to 3 characters?

Sorry for the late reply Keith, as far as I know we cannot modify the search function as it is inbuilt in the software. I will look again in Admin to verify.

      Thanks Dave
Perhaps there is a "wildcard" that can be used in searches? Often it's the "questioin mark" or the "star key)

So long as we know it is cool.

I have now set the minnimum character for search details to 3 letters. Searches will take longer as a result.

Thanks Dave. If it causes problems, I'd bet there is a wildcard that could be used instead. (if only we know what it is)

Nothing in Admin that is wildcard related to the search function. Try it with 3 letters as I don't think it made any difference.

I don't think the 3 char search is working yet.
I've searched for "OME", "LSD", "OEM", "DPF", and finally "PAJ" (both upper case and lower case). The search is allowed, but says "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."
I know there is "DPF" and "PaJ" in this thread. http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/...read.php?t=607
When I search for "santanna" it returns the above thread.

Yeah I have had a good look at it and dont think I should go tampering with the server. This is what it says in Admin!
When using the vBulletin default search, this option limits the size of indexed words. The smaller this number is, the larger your search index, and conversely your database is going to be.

When using the Fulltext search, this option limits the size of words that may be searched for. Smaller words take longer to search for as they are more common. MySQL Fulltext has its own minimum word length as well that must be changed at the server level.

Currently we are using the Fulltext search engine and that is why there was no change when I set it to 3 characters. I will talk to Stew (admin) about it as I don't want to meltdown the forum poking around in stuff I know jack about.

Ah, the voice of sanity! "Know your limitations"

(Something I've had to deal with after moving house. I now know the local plumbing, airconditioning, tv antenna, pool and garage door repair people.)

Obligatory Pajero applicability quote: "Of course we can make it through that obstacle without damaging anything!"

LSD and DPF produced results today.

                      Looks like you've solved it.

I tried searching for GLS DiD.

The GLS searched ok but "The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search: did"

                        Makes sense I suppose.
