I've used Donaldson that filter kit, ever since I started servicing myself and staying away from dealer. I have never had problem with Donaldson air filter not fitting, it is quite a snug fit.
There was a particular brand that someone or a couple people had an issue with not fitting properly and it was every filter but was hit and miss if that particular brand fitted each time or not.
BTW you can get that Donaldson kit a little cheaper from other places, just compare shipping cost if you are having it shipped.NS SWB X 3.2DiD - Factory locker, Hella spotties, GME UHF, 2" lift

Just remember that servicing isn’t just changing oil and filters. It’s observing anything that looks/feels different, checking belts, checking wheel bearings, checking tyre wear etc etc as a preventative measure. If done properly this takes time and requires you to know what you’re looking for. That’s why when you find a good mechanic you stick to them. In my experience dealers have very limited time to “service” your car, not enough to give it a thorough inspection.
Some people just change their oil and oil filter every 10,000km, after a couple years they have done 30,000km with barely an inspection. That is when issues occur as the warning signs aren’t noticed.SOLD 2004 NP 3.2 auto

I just caught my belts in time on my old NP. 1st thing I detected a very slight , occasional squeak on acceleration.
Got down with a torch and noticed chunks of the belt missing.
I would suggest replacing belts every 70 to 80k, they aren't expensive and the job , apart from being tedious, is not difficult.

Services
Over the last 20 odd years have always done my own oil changes etc. except twice. Last one was on current NW at end of warranty (90,000)
Big hearted dealer did it for just under $1100.
One item replaced was air filter, even tho' I had a K&N fitted.
Told me I needed brake pads: $400/axle!
Did it myself for $85, as Supersteep had a deal going, 2 sets for one price. Have been told that if you keep taking metal off the discs, you run a greater chance of them warping as they get thinner.
Fitted new belts and 6 months later a funny sound developed. I found where by squirting water out of a hand bottle on each pulley, and the 'squeal' stopped straight away on the offending one. Loosened the belts and ran fine sand paper around the grooves of the pulleys, and so far no noise.
Just recently I felt a slight pulsing in the brake pedal at speed but at ordinary pressure. After a bit of grease on the locking pins on the fronts, it is all good.
I'm no mechanic, but I'm a fussy b..., and I usually notice any small differences in sounds or 'feel' in the car, and attend to it. I also never push a car too hard.
But as for those dealers!!!!!Greg

Its really not rocket science is it? However the biggest advantage to being able to do it yourself is the experience built up over time. Many years of working on my own motorbikes/boat engines/vehicles gives me experience in being able to solve most issues with my vehicles. Trouble with vehicles now is that they are way over complicated and contain so much electrical garbage that it almost makes self servicing a very difficult procedure. This forum is a brilliant way of assisting us with keeping our vehicles going well and analysing problems for a good outcome.
Any young person getting into their first or second car would find doing a basic mechanical/electrical course a huge advantage for their wallet as well. If you have a general idea of what is going on with your car you may not get ripped off by an unscrupulous mechanic. As you say...listen to your car and if anything sounds or feels different investigate it straight away.
Agree....But as for those dealers!!!!! [/QUOTE]Dicko. FNQ

It would be cheaper to just void the warranty in the long run.02 NM Pajero 3.2 DID Auto with Snorkel, Turbosmart Dual Stage Boost Controller, Kinugawa 15T Hybrid turbo with 56mm Billet compressor wheel and extended tips, 2” lift, 3” straight through turbo back exhaust, EGR Removal, ECU Piggyback Chip, Raw Nitro shockies, 22” Black Rhino wheels & 33x12.5 mud tyres, EGT, boost and engine temp gauges, catch can, Synergy 4b Ronbox, K&N air filter, 320x300 Front mount intercooler with 3” polished inlet piping, 4 Bar MAP sensor @29psi many other mods

I've stocked up on oil, filters for the next 2 services (including the 60k one I did myself)
Cost me less than half the price of the 60k service I got quoted *$850*
Missus told me why I didn't do this earlier, said because of the warranty.

I've wondered about resale and self servicing. I do all my own servicing and have done since the warranty ran out. I fill out the log book every time in great detail. Every bit of love the Paj gets is entered into the log book. Hopefully a buyer will look at the log book and see that I really look after it.Cheers, Hatto
