G'day guys, weird thing happened today when my mechanic called to inform me that 4wd direct will not sell him Lovells 2" lift HD springs for our NM Pajero. Apparantly SD is all i will need? Apparantly it's because i don't have at least 200kg's of load in the rear at all times. I do have a gas tank in the rear and an alloy bull bar on the front. From what i have learned the Heavy duty springs lift the vechile too high and the ride is quite harsh. When we go camping we would carry at least 100kgs of wood an icebox, fridge. spare battery and obviously lots of other bits and pieces. Add to this the Camper/Boat or Caravan and i am left wondering to be honest. We are going to get Firestone Coil-Rite air bags fitted at the same time, so perhaps this would assist? When choosing your lovells did you go SD OR HD? No matter how much my mechanic tried to convince this guy, he was adament. Interested in your opinion

G'day Mick, I am going through pretty much same dilema as I put HDs in front and SDs in rear and found the rear dropped below the front without much weight so then stuck HD's in the rear and now I am finding it crashy over small bumps. Ride is not that bad but bad enough to make me wonder whether I should have gone SDs all round so now I am planning on getting some SDs fronts and seeing whether the ride improves enough to outweigh the loss in height. Up front I only have a nudge bar, second bat & bash plates and in the rear I normally have no real weight.Cheers, J

G'day Mick,
For them to say SD is all you're going to need, well maybe they haven't listened to you and what your offroad needs are.(?)
Just gone through the same process - went to an independent suspension mob, told them what he have fitted, what is to be fitted, and the type of holidaying we do and it came down to Kings or Lovells at pretty much the same price - and he definately suggested HD.
Cheers

I've just fitted Lovells HD front and rear, and they are definitely not harsh at all. The vehicle rides flatter in corners , and doesn't dip under brakes. Empty it's as better than standard, and with a load, it's a no brainer............MUCH better.

Yes - Interesting, i thought better to do it right the first time thinking HD were the way. I guess most of the time it's city running. I was reading somewhere where SD/MD are a better spring for articulation off road.Cheers Mick 2012 NW GLX MANUAL

(perceived) harshness or ability to handle load. Unfortunately, all things in life are a trade-off, suspension included. I went HD all round and my perception is that its not harsh but firm, but I can load the back up now without issue. I only notice the harshness on speed humps in the city.

Ive just switched from Dobinson SD to Lovells HD, and can definetley notice the firmer ride both on road and off. I havent had it loaded up with camping gear yet though. Got me the lift I was after though and Im happy. Maybe try calling Lovells direct and asking them what the go is. I ordered mine direct through their head office.Silver NM Pajero 3.5L Auto. I discussed my situation with Bushskinz and they recommended HD Lovells up front for the Diesel engine and then it was a bit of a choice for the rear as I rarely have much weight in the back and tow a light weight camper trailer with not too much ball weight. I went with SD in the rear. I am very happy with choice in terms of feel, ride and handling, front and back, but it does look slightly odd as the vehicle is now very level from front to rear - standard the rear is higher. With the trailer on it may be a touch down at rear compared to front.
The beauty is that if I my circumstances change it is pretty cheap and simple to drop the HD springs in.
If I had a heavier trailer or loaded my back up HD would have to be used in my opinion, regardless of the consequences.

Thanks for taking the time to read all. I have decided to take the advice i received and go with what has been described to me as MD which i believe is SD. I have the lovells/bilsteins on order and hope to have them later this week or early next. I am also adding firestone airbags. We will be towing our caravan from time to time but i think the airbags will take up any slack. Not long to go now before we leave for darwin so be nice to get this sorted before then.Cheers Mick 2012 NW GLX MANUAL

When talking springs particularly with the Lovells you really need to give the spring part number, I find using the term SD and HD is useless. In the front you can have a CFS90, CFR90, CFR90HD and CFR90EHD, so it's a bit more involved than SD and HD.
I fitted CFR90 and while it handles better it is harsher, that is you will feel the bumps more than standard but it's not too bad.

I'm currently looking at doing something with my springs. I'm really not happy with the lift provided by my ARB Old Man Emu springs which are SD front and rear. The front sits higher then the rear which just looks stupid and it hasn't provided much of a lift at all.
I'm trying to decide between going HD's front and rear to give myself maximum lift, or going SD's front and rear which I believe will still give me a higher lift then what I currently have with my ARB springs, but the spring rate will be softer and theoretically provide me with a smoother nicer ride on and off road...
The SD springs are still rated at a 50mm lift, is this consistant with what people have acheived in the real world with the SD springs?
I got a 30mm lift at the front and 25mm lift in the rear of my Pajero with the ARB Old Man emu springs, pretty crap really!2009 NT Pajero GLX 3.2 Auto - Sold

I should check mine again as I've done a few hundred k's now but just after install I got 30mm front and a tad over 50mm in the back. Thia ia with CFR90 and CRR91. I had SD ARB springs in my NP and they were alot softer than the lovells, they were quite good offroad as they soaked up the bumps but on road I found them too soft and got about 25mm front and 40mm rear.
