    Alternative winches - portable

Recently used the T516 Tirfor for the first time. After the usual time to figure it out, it was used as a simple pull. While it was a real struggle for the operator (think joining the most extreme fitness program) it did its job. Back home cleaned the cable and rust proofed it and had a go at the winch. One day I will pluck up the courage to take it apart to clean it properly.

Observations were many. Like how heavy 20 metres of 11.5mm cable can be. How much effort is needed to scull drag a vehicle sitting in its bash plates and diff.

So looking at other options. Front mounted winch is out as this would overload the Challenger's front end and also add a lot of weight that is not needed for over ninety percent of the Challenger's kilometres.

Back from the trip decided to get a suitable snatch block. Yes I have one but at 106mm it is below the 200mm diameter sheave required by Tirfor. Priced 200mm sheave snatch blocks and went into cardiac arrest. If the price does not do that then the shear weight of the beast will. Ok scrub that.

Now looking at 30 metres of rope on fleabay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/191656777...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This I figure combined with my snatch block should turn the Tirfor into a more capable recovery device. But the trade-off is only ten metres of pull before a reset.

Also looked at this on fleabay,

Rope breaking strength is about 7400Lbs. This is the best block & Tackle system available for the price and built for the real world no hype this system will lift your load. Warning: Do not put yourself in harm's way, stand clear of any potential failure of rope or pulley.

Ok only five metres before reset but four times effort so if this does not shift a PC Challenger not much else will. Bit worried over the rope's rating but remember the full pull is on the pulley ends not the rope.

Lets ramp it up and found this (or more accurately a friend that loves to buy with my money). http://www.specialisedforce.com.au/p...-capstan-winch

Cheap it is not but with 100 metres of rope you get one tonne pull, Snatch block, then two tonnes, and with twin double sheave pulleys four tonne and 25 metres of distance. Anyone ever seen one in the flesh?

Me thinks the first is the most likely for me but the last is tempting.

    Hi Ent,

Wolf 4x4 do an AFN behind bumper winch mount for the MN Triton which should fit. This mounts a winch quite low so your approach angle will be decreased and the winch will be the first thing buried.

I have seen other mounts available that mount the winch higher but you need to lift the intercooler and ATF cooler (if fitted) as a part of the install.

I posted all the details a year or so ago so if I can find them I will add a link.

Tirfors, bloody hard work unless you are under 30 years old and super fit and strong. Muscle strain, heart attack/stroke/brain embolism type of work for the unfit and the middle aged onwards!

    cheers, OJ.

The tirfors definetly take some muscle. Enough for you to resolve not to get bogged again.

        Hi OJ

Have to love the site's mismatching photographs to vehicles but found the Triton one. Fully agree, way too low. My front bash plate has more than its far share of close encounters without adding to this issues. Also winch might be hard to get at when you need it by being what the vehicle is wedged on!

X2 on the Tirfor. My fear was breaking shear pins, so now have ten spares as freight made this number look cheap! But reading suggests, unless a mob of Tongan backrowers turn up to help, then they are very rare to shear off. On straight pull I could not believe the effort the Tirfor required. One hundred kilograms of under thirty year old struggled. Not sure on the leverage ratio but it looked rather under done. Still it did the job.

As getting more adventurous winching is on the cards. The diff locks are great on rocky stuff but on slippery mud they are only marginally better than standard 4x4. Just trying to tee up getting DooSo over to Melbourne to have the lower transfer gear fitted. That combined with the diff locks should make life easier to gently climb up and down things. I cringe on the power and speed approach using momentum.

But still a long winch up hill not going to be fun with the Tirfor. The Ring River track is well known for long winch sections and kills winches and batteries so do not think I will Venturer forth only armed with the Tirfor.

Still, the Tirfor is very handy if you can not pull from the front. More than once a side pull might have been on the cards as well as reversing out and returning with tail between ones legs.

Looked at portable electric winches but towbar mounts not the go as normally DooSo is wedged on the towball/recovery point. Front mount I have not seen. Also, comes with the need to run heavy electrical cable and maybe second battery.

          Hi ENT,

A couple of years back, I got a phone quote to add a front tow hitch for about $500. The plan was to then have a portable that I could hitch to the front or rear when required (never got around to it, but a winch cradle is surprisingly cheap). Apparently the front hitch is much more common in the US - I've never seen one here.

That was just a quote though - sight unseen. Doesn't mean that it is actually possible, but I think it would be a more flexible alternative to lugging a winch around 24/7.
