Default Weird noise issue

Hi all,

Got a weird noise issue that I hope someone has ideas about.

Got the Dobinsons springs and shocks installed over a week ago (24th of May). No issues from that day but on the 25th, in the afternoon, I started hearing dull rattling sound coming from the rear but only over small repeated bumps and at low speeds. Not very loud and cannot hear it from echos in narrow lane ways. Went back to Dobinsons twice to get them to check everything. They backed off the lower arm bolts and re-tightened them. They even had a guy sit in the rear cargo area to pin point the noise. They reckon it was coming from the right side and suggested something was lose in there but they weren't very sure.

On the weekend, I removed the splash guard that protects the fule pipes and removed a lot of crud, but nothing obvious that will cause noise. I even cable tied the rear end of it as there is only one scrivet holding it in a the rear. I also remove the shackles on the tow hitch and the tongue. I also checked the jack and the tools and all are secure. I even raised the 3rd row seat. I also opened the spare wheel carrier cover and checked everything was tight there. Went under the car myself and made sure the exhaust is not hitting any thing and the bash plates are all secure.

The sound is like someone tapping on a plastic trim and is not a single knock but several together and as mentioned above, only at speeds below 60. I can repeat it easily by driving over small repeated bumps on the road (like those temporary repairs). Going over large spoon drains and dips and speeed bumps etc, even at speed would not produce the noise.

The only thing that I can think of is perhaps something to do with the rear brakes as the only thing that happened outside of ordinary driving on the 25th, was emergency braking with the ABS going as some idiot pulled out in front of me.

Cheers,
Vlad

I have something similar with my rear Dobinsons. Geopaj helped me track it down - it looks like movement in the top shock bushes, which compress onto a shoulder on the top stud. I added some washers onto the top bush to add compression, but it hasn't helped.

I've been chasing a noise in the rear of my NW which only seems present on "sharp" bumps in the road.

If I pull the hand brake up a couple of clicks and drive over the same bumps there is no noise.

I believe it is something to do with the park brake shoes rubbing on the backing plate when there is no tension on them. It can be fixed with a dob of grease where it rubs.

I haven't actually got around to taking the wheel and rotor off yet to diagnose further but I've pretty much exhausted all other avenues chasing it down.

Cheers, tried with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 clicks and still there so unlikely park brake related.

Went back to Dobinsons today and they swapped the shocks and while doing a bounce test, noticed there was movement in the front lower control arm of the left rear. Will replace the whole set of bushes and wheel alignment this Thursday and see how it goes.
