I have always been curious about this question because I tow a full trailer to Moreton Island each year and never bothered to deflate the tyres on the trailer. My theory (or ignorance) was because it is not trying to gain traction on the sand as it is passive and the less surface area the better.
I would like to hear other opinions as I want the best performance possible from both car and trailer.

Scott

One big advantage of deflating any tyre is you get a much bigger footprint on the ground. So, deflating your trailer tyres gives them a bigger footprint as well as makes them less likely to dig into the sand.

Deflating the tyres will give a larger contact area which means the tyres will not sink into the sand as much. Yes, same pressure as the tug is the go.

Always deflate your trailer tyres to match your 4wd, not only will it take less power as you will be rolling over the sand rather than ploughing/dragging the trailer through the sand but you are less likely to get bogged. Also off the bitumen you lessen the chance of getting a puncture from a rock or stake.
There is a thread I posted some time ago "footprint length" google it or maybe someone will attach the link (sorry on mobile at the moment). This thread explains what happens to the size and shape of a tyres footprint as the tyre is deflated and how it then behaves in soft sand.
cheers, old Jack.
