Decoke / new exhaust / ECU remap

Finally got a chance to go back to MRT to have the XB kit fitted over the last fortnight. They did 75k service & inlet manifold clean first over a couple of days, then yesterday fitted new 3" ACMS + stainless rear muffler. This is the Beaudesert Exhausts kit, which is mandrel bent and uses original mounting points, also keeps the same clearance off the bashplates & body. The weld quality & alignment is spot on, certainly looks a quality product. This also necessitated another tweak of the ECU to allow it to use better engine breathing. A minor issue was the Redarc EGT probe didn't quite work with existing bung so they had to drill an extra hole for the compression fitting.

It is a significant difference again from the first upgrade, cleaning the manifold and inlet ports has given the Paj a real boost. MRT claim an extra 35kw & 40% more torque with the XB kit (ECU remap + exhaust), without having gone down the dyno route, I would have to say seat of pants impression would definitely agree with this. The vehicle just feels a lot more responsive to throttle input and the turbo spools up to full boost a LOT faster. It was previously blowing smoke off the line with the just the remap, this has completely cleared up with the new tune.

As Apsilon mentioned in his build thread, it is not explosive acceleration, just goes hard in all situations and you find yourself travelling faster than previously. There are a couple of places where I turn right across busy traffic on the way home, previously I had to wait for a large gap to get through, last night it felt almost effortless to get around in front of the oncoming traffic.

Really happy overall with the work undertaken by MRT, not cheap but definitely worth it in my books.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

      LRA 58l auxilary tank

A couple of recent trips away with three Prados had left me with a case of range envy, especially after having to drive 90kms out of my way to fill up during a recent trip to Barrington Tops I had been considering an aux. tank for a while for some longer trips coming up over the next few years so bit the bullet and asked Eddie & Chris at Artarmon Automotive do the job. There has been a bit of a rush on these, Eddie indicated this was the second they had fitted that week.

The workmanship is spot on, you can certainly see it is a quality product looking at the finish of the the tank and fittings. It fits perfectly on brackets off the subframe rails and only hangs down a little so reduces the departure angle by a few degrees. The first fill up was certainly the most diesel I have ever put in the Paj, the new tank took just over 60 litres. Looking forward to giving it a good workout out over the next few months.

      Cheers,
      Stephen

I was the other one they'd fitted this week & ditto on the quality of service! In the same boat as you, mates got a Prado & we're doing an outback trip later this year so now won't have to worry as much.

Enjoying your build thread Scouter but I think it's dangerous as my mod list starts to grow longer....

But in all seriousness the engine tuning and LR tank mods look great and it is good to know who people are using in NSW.

Thanks mate, it is coming along just takes time to research & either do the work or get it done. Next on the list is a front bar, some auxiliary lighting and some instrumentation.

As previously mentioned very happy with Artarmon Auto, slightly less so with MRT. It is a big busy operation and they are a bit more focused on performance cars rather than 4WDs. Having said that, they have good follow up & have resolved any issues. I have a small problem with the exhaust just touching on the new aux tank so will have to head back there for a little realignment.

            Cheers,

              Very tidy rig scouter.

Love all the mods. Definitely a lot of thought put in to each picec.

              Well done.

Apsilon's & PradoEater's recent posts http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/...t=42199&page=8 swayed me towards an Ecutek ECU remap by MRT at Rhodes http://www.mrtperformance.com.au/per...formance-guide. Originally I had planned to do inlet manifold clean, new exhaust then the remap, but MRT came up with a deal to do standard ECU remap then do custom tune for free when manifold decoke & new exhaust happen next month. So effectively I have had around 60% of the planned upgrade so far - http://www.mrtperformance.com.au/per...ajero-did-32l-. Not super happy with the badges going on as the stealth aspect of ECU remap was one of the appeals of this upgrade, they will come off after the next stage.

Very impressed with the outcome to date - a good reduction in turbo lag, general increase in urge across the board, but especially in low to mid range. You can really feel the extra power & torque whenever the throttle is opened. Economy has improved slightly but it has been hard to tell with strong temptation to use the extra power when the opportunities present themselves

Did you get a dyno done to see exactly what improvements have been? The reason I ask is that the graph shown on your thumbnail is one I have seen before from a 2009 pajero as well....

Unfortunately not, they were fairly adamant that it was not required for standard XA/XB tune as they have done a number of Pajeros recently so are happy with the standard remap they have built for NT/NWs. When I pushed the point, they indicated there was a long wait for dyno time and this would push back the upgrade for a couple of weeks. This didn't work for my schedule so I just proceeded with the standard remap. I can certainly feel a significant improvement so am happy to proceed on this basis.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, they are a very busy shop and seem to favour the STi / Evo / Toyota 86 gang who make up the bulk of their customers judging by their marketing and vehicles in the customer parking area. While I was mostly happy with the service, I would probably look to a smaller specialist tuner if I ever repeated this process.

                  Cheers,

looking great! I am going to see Eddie for the first time this Thursday for an issue with either my front CV or inner bearing. I have been meaning to see him for a while now as he has been working on Pajeros since 1983 (or there abouts)! My mechanic 50m from my front door has been far too convenient in the past but this time I need someone that knows a thing or two about Pajeros.

How good are long range tanks...no more range anxiety with my 146L of fuel on board!

Nomad Valve Body & TCC Lock up switch

The Pajero was my first automatic in about 15 years so I had always expected it would take a bit of getting used to. I was happy with most aspects of my initial test drive but had noted the vehicle quickly gaining speed down a steep hill so know I was probably going to have to adjust driving style. Accordingly I have used sport shift mode a fair bit but still haven't been entirely happy with the feel of the transmission.

I had been watching a number of threads on Torque Converter Control lock up switches and Nomad valve body upgrades with generally positive reviews on these modifications. So last week I took the plunge & booked mine in for Nomad (not Extreme) valve body upgrade which includes flush and change to synthetic AT fluid. This took a week as Wholesale Autos didn't have any exchange valve bodies available so the agent had to remove mine and send down to Melbourne where it was rebuilt with heavy duty springs etc. This appears to be the first time the AT had been serviced on mine (85,000 kms), the agent remarked the fluid was pretty old and the filter contaminated. Wholesale strongly recommend changing fluid every 40,000 kms or 24 months for heavy use (towing & hard off-road).

I picked it up on Friday afternoon and have to say it has made a significant difference to the on-road feel of the Paj. Not the kick in the pants change that I experienced with the ECU/exhaust mod last year, but one I am very happy with. The transmission is now much more crisp & responsive with no hesitation on up & down changes in Drive. When using the A/T in Sports mode, the changes are fast & precise and feels a lot stronger. I would say it feels more sporty but not unduly harsh. I did notice that the change to 5th gear on light throttle still feels a little abrupt at times so no change there... I have found myself leaving it in Drive a lot more as the transmission is working better and seems to be in the correct gear more often. The hesitation and flaring previously experienced on light throttle has been almost completely disappeared. Wholesale claim they have built in 10% engine braking into the upgraded valve body, this feels about right heading down hills over the weekend. The AT operating temperature appears to have dropped around 5 degrees in most cases, but haven't seen any change in fuel consumption yet.

I have only used the lock up a few short times over the weekend as I didn't get on the open road, but it adds another dimension to driving on slight uphills, and to slowing on down hills. Can't wait to get off-road to try it out!

Thanks to Pickle, Pasniny & Backpaje for their positive reviews that helped convince me to undertake these modifications. Not cheap, but ones that I think have been worthwhile additions to the vehicle.

                        Cheers,
                        Stephen

                          Fire Extinguishers

A recent thread on the effectiveness of Fire Extinguishers http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/...ad.php?t=50415 and an camping incident I heard about over the Christmas break got me thinking about how to improve on board capability in the Paj. I had previously fitted a 1kg unit in front of the drivers seat http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/...5&postcount=42, thankfully haven't had to use it! I have managed to fit in a 2 kg unit using existing mounting bracket with an extra hole for the longer unit. It didn't come with a steel retaining clip so I may have to upgrade this at a later time. In the meantime I have used a nylon luggage strap to hold it securely.

The 1kg unit has now gone behind the cargo barrier using a couple of stainless hose clamps to mount it securely to the rail. Nicely out of eyesight in the rear mirror, and uses some of the wasted space near the ceiling above the fridge.

                              Interior work

It has been a while since I have done any work on the Paj, been too busy working or running Scout activities. However, I got inspired after reading the ongoing thread on footrests https://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum...ad.php?t=24211. Using up some birthday gift cards I recently bought some Sandgrabba floor mats https://nobullaccessories.com.au/pro...i-sandgrabbas/ and also added a footrest ordered from Amayama. I used M6 threaded rod & coupler along with a couple of spare washers. Very happy the mats fitted perfectly over the footrest, it makes a noticeable difference to comfort on longer trips

I had also noticed some wear & tear on the back seats so fitted a set of canvas seat covers from MSA http://www.msa4x4.com.au/canvas-seat-covers/. These are the 12oz version so not too stiff, but still a bit of fun to fit... They obviously feel different to the factory cloth seats but still comfortable.

Anyway, very happy with the results now having a relatively mud/dirt proof interior and place to put my left foot.
