    Probably not.
Realistically you may want to do other things while in there and the odds are something will be worn enough to contemplate replacing it. I would look at it being a rebuild minus the gears. I know with mine if I get it looked at before failure I would upgrade a few things such as TC and valve body, there goes 2K straight away. Do the pins and whatever else is in need of tlc, 3K+ methinks. But then I am a pessimist, and I am not usually disappointed. At least then it would solid for the rest of the cars life.
Got to like older cars. At least it isn't an LC200. Read on another forum a replacement engine cost someone 32k to replace. Seems bit step but then it is Toyota.

A little follow up about these Jatco V5A51 gearboxes. My Pajero's gearbox let go last month. Happened very fast. I first lost reverse but eventually lost drive as well. I dropped the sump and found an unbelievable amount of metal and big chunks in it. I pondered getting a second hand box from the wreckers or private but thought you never know when that one may let go so I decided to bite the bullet and get quotes from 3 auto trans specialists in the area to get mine rebuilt/overhauled. They were all around the same $$$$ and chose the one that I liked the most who explained it in detail about this auto box.
I got it towed to the place and they confirmed that the front planetary pins had fallen out and completely wrecked the gearbox. I could of optioned for an exchange unit for quick turnaround but decided to get mine rebuilt plus torque converter as it would of had metal fillings throughout it as well. He explained to me that they have a lot of these boxes come in on this model due to these pins from the planetary sets letting go and that's why they weld them in to stop this from happening again. He stated that he has not rebuilt an Aisin V5AWF that's in the newer Pajero's as of yet and explained that they are a very well built gearbox. So after 7 days I got the call to say it was ready and I am very happy with the workmanship and way the car is driving.

Everyone complains about the cost of the diesel injector pump which are quite expensive but they should also consider the costs of getting these gearboxes rebuilt/overhauled also when they finally let go.

I should mention also that this cost $6500 and that what was quoted from all 3 places. While the gearbox was dropped i asked them to check the rear main seal as I had noticed oil on my bell housing which had been driving me up the wall as I had been working out where this oil was coming from and sure enough it was this seal. Replaced using a genuine seal only and that cost an extra $216 which included polishing the crank.

I'm not complaining as I love this 4WD and will continue to look after it as it has done to me.
The gearbox let go in mine at 316,000km which he said was very good as he had seen them come in as early as 160,000km.

        Hi Rancet,

What did the gearset cost?. I understand they are a big chunk of the cost.
If I keep my NP, the first thing I will do will be to get the box overhauled as I think it has a problem but two auto places say different. Hopefully if I did it before the gearset let go it would a lot cheaper.

About $18000 for a long motor. Quite possibly could run into $30,000 fitted. The ridiculous amount of complexity in this motor was one of the reasons I went Pajero instead of the 200 series....also the feeling of throwing money away didnt feel right.

$1600 just for the planetary set
Problem is once they pull it apart they might say you will net a full master kit as you might come back saying it's leaking or something else wrong with it and that way it covers there arse. Also just to R&R the gearbox you looking at $1200-$1400 in labour from a transmission place.

Yeah I got quoted $1500 for a full replacement planetary gear set, and they aren't easy to get apparently. So including a full rebuild kit (TC, valve body and welding of the pins) total cost was going to be about 5.5k from memory. I didn't have the money at the time so went with a second hand box. Cost me about $2200 or something like that instead. So I could still get the same issue again. My recommendation is a rebuild and welded pins, this way the known problem with these boxes is no longer an issue.
