    Cleaning intake manifold on NT?

I'm thinking I should look at my intake manifold and clean it up, I haven't cleaned it since I bought the vehicle at 120000kms and it's done 170000 now, I also have no idea if its ever been cleaned before (I somehow doubt it).

Will cleaning my intake manifold improve my fuel economy? (if it's carboned up which I highly think it will be! - based on the fact that the best fuel economy I can get is about 10.8L/100k on the highway...)

Is it a hard job to do? Is it something you can do yourself or do you need specialised equipment?

Do you need to replace the gasket or can you re-use the old one if you don't damage it?

I'd like to clean the intake manifold and then install the resistor mod to disable the EGR valve.

    Hi,

It takes a while. Yes, they need a special unit to clean it properly and mine was a day and a half. Don't just get the spray!

Couldn't really notice too much difference in fuel econ or performance, but good to know it won't clog up in the future.

Got a Catch Can installed and the SPV Mod. Probably only need the SPV Mod after the clean though. I had the C/C installed first at the time of the clean. HAd ours done at 60,000km and it was pretty dirty.

    Cheers,
    Sally

What was the all up cost of the clean?

I did mine with two can of liquid Molly and some degreaser. Took half a day to clean. Pretty easy. Just time consuming

Over 12 months later and now a bit over 190,000kms I still haven't had a chance to do it.

I am looking at getting a couple of my mechanically minded cousins and my dad to help me over the Christmas break.

So what do I need to do this? It sounds like I just clean and reuse the gasket? It also sounds like acetone might be the way to go, how much would I need?

Are there any guides on how to do this?

There’s a guide for I think the triton engine I used. Pretty similar. Only special tools needed are ratchet wrenches. As I think there’s one bolt at the back on a flange that’s hard to get a socket on. I reused metal gaskets and got new rocker gasket.

The liquid molly stuff destroys the gunk easier then anything I found but is $$$.

Just take ur time. It’s just a few nuts and bolts the hard part is not forgetting something. LOL. Also just be gentle on the fuel rail lines etc.

It hasn't changed that I have noticed, still around the high 10's on the highway and around the 12-13 around town.

Im also planning to do mine over the christmas break. My wife has a couple of weeks off so having my car out of action for a few days wont be a problem..

There is a really good thread on here somewhere that gives step by step instructions to do this job.

I have plenty of tools, and I plan on adjusting the tappets during this job as well. The only real problem I can foresee is that my plans don't always coincide with reality. I have made a similar plan in the past, but I still haven't done it.

                  Maybe this time.

I’ll look for the guide. From
Memory I just googled it and found something. Good idea to do tappets at the same time.
