Tyres for 10% Sand 90% Road

    Hi all.

I'm in the market for a new set of tyres for my NL SWB.

I do some sand (beach) driving now and will do more in the future. In reality though, it will only be 10% sand work at best.

I also tow my tinny all over the place on bitumen. And my Pajero is my daily drive.

Am I right to think that sand driving doesn't require anything special so HT tyres would be fine?

Are some HT tyres better suited to 18psi running?

I have been a long term purchaser of Cooper tyres but this is my first tyre purchase for a 4wd.

    Good advice appreciated.

Yes, HT tyres will be the best option - especially with 90% on-road use..

I see Falken have a 4 for 3 offer on the WILDPEAK AT3W this month. Food for thought.

90/10 on 265x70x16 you should be ok with most decent tyres to be honest... I got round half the UAE on 265x60x18 Bridgestone Dueller 840’s and watched a stock SWB 3.5 with 16” Geolandar HT’s get round some tricky stuff. [emoji1360]

Here is some more food for thought. Both my PB Challenger and MN Triton had 245 70 16 HT tyres fitted which needed replacing. I bought nine new 255 70 16 HT tyres for a total of $560 and had them fitted and balanced for $25 per wheel. Check Gumtree for this very common size and you will find they are standard fitment on Ford Ranger Mazda BT60 and Nissan Navara dual cab utes. You will find many have been driven from the dealership straight to the tyre outlet to have huge wheels and tyres fitted.

For sand, you don't want tread. There's a photo of my old Landie on here with road truck tyres on sand: skinnys 7.50R16. It was fabulous.

The best bet is low tread, low pressure.

SWB Pajeros, at least the later ones, only had the 265/70R16 size. You aren't allowed thinner than the skinniest tyre listed on the sticker so 265 is the legal minimum. You can go to a 75 profile if you want the extra cm or so of clearance.

People talk about fat tyres: you just want lots of surface on the ground=low pressure. Tall, short, fat, thin, the key is low pressure and from that maximum footprint. I'd consider 245 or 255 but technically they are regarded as not specified despite the 235mm width on GL LWB.

My advice would be: road tyres are preferred for sand so your tyre should be as road oriented as possible. Don't go fatter. You don't need to go taller but can if you want.
=-( Sadly bought back: 99 NL Shortie. In a-peeling blue
=-) Happily replaced by: 98 NL LWB Diesel

I run Pirelli Scorpion ATR on my NS swb. Very quiet on road, good in the wet and reasonable off road, not that I do alot just gravel roads and a bit of sand mostly. Been on for approx 70000kms and still has a few mm left.

Just my thoughts based on current experience.

                    Good advice above... [emoji1360]

I’ve heard the Pirelli Scorpion are a good all rounder too. Geolandar AT-S (G012) are the favoured tyre here in the dunes, need some puncture resistance for the gatch trails. They are heavier and noisier than an HT tyre though.

Below is stock with 18” Dueller 840’s... stuck was too much campfire joy and lack of caffeine the day after. [emoji1]

I was running perelli atrs on the ns and still run them on the nw. The ns actually goes offroad and is now running more aggressive tyres. Having said that they are a very good tyre offroad in dust sand and gravel. The nw will get h/t tyres next time.
