I have a quick question about upgrading the door speakers on an 03 NP Exceed, i know they are 6.5" speakers all round but can i do a straight swap or do i have to buy spacers for them? and do i have to cut and shut speaker wires or do they go to a OEM plug?
And do have to be weary about speaker depth as well? I tried the forum search but i couldn't find anything specific |

Do yourself a favour and spent a few $$ on Dynamat or similar while you are in there. Just did my NW with new speakers and head unit etc. but before everything was swapped out I put the PingJing (cheaper Dynamat alternative) in one rear door but still the stock speaker. My goodness, the difference is like night and day. Better sound, less road noise and a nice 'thunk' on closing the doors.
With new head unit, upgraded speakers all round (including tweeters) and the door treatment the stereo now kicks ar*e, a million percent better than the crummy stock gear. Here's a laugh, this is a stock door speaker vs the Alpine's I put in the front doors.

The previous owner put a double din touchscreen unit in and it works a treat. |

RRising.
My experience with fitting aftermarket speakers is that it is a tedious but not difficult job. Well worth the effort. You may need spacers for clearance behind the speaker and you might then have to make some minor modifications to the door trim so it fits without contacting the speaker. If I was to do this all over again, I would bypass SCA and Auto Barn and go straight to my local-ish car audio specialist. They will sell you speakers that will meet your expectations and should give you very helpful advice about fitting. My biggest tip though is take your own music to the store and listen to it with the speakers you intend to buy. You can't really make an informed decision by listening to an FM radio station in a shop. Let us know how you go. Life is too short not to have good sound in your car!

I am keen to do it myself, from what i can see, there is quite a bit of space behind the speaker grill so i could fit a small spacer. I am just not sure if it uses the standard 4 bolt or the stupid 3 bolt design. |

I drilled a few extra holes but pretty much my speakers fitted fine...
At worst you could just make up a bit of an adapter ring with plywood.

Has anyone seen a system like this? Its a metal plate that seems to be covering a large hole in the door frame. The OEM speaker is recessed in and is an awkward shape.
BTW, these are on both rear doors/ ![]() I ended up going to Autobarn and getting a spacer that fits into a lancer as it was a similar shape but even then it wasn't right but i drilled some new holes into the plate and it fits and is covered by the door trim. I managed to cut down a couple of spade terminals to use in the oem speaker plug and it works, i absolutely loathe cutting and shutting wires. ![]() |
