Taronga Zoo in Mosman is located amongst some of the most expensive real estate in Australia, accordingly there are not a lot of caravan parks around there or in Sydney metro area. You could try Terry Hills Caravan Park http://terreyhillscaravanpark.com.au which is about 30 mins drive to the zoo outside peak hours. It is located just off a main road and close to Ku-ring-Gai Chase National Park & beaches.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

If you want a bushland setting their is http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/...k-caravan-park about 25 minutes from the zoo.

If you prefer the beach there ishttps://www.nrmaparksandresorts.com....iAAEgJ77fD_BwE at Narrabeen on the northern beaches about 300 Metres to the beach and an hour from the zoo.

There is no way you could travel from Terry hills to the Zoo in 30 minutes.

There is also Featherdale Wildlife Park to visit https://www.featherdale.com.au/park-...iAAEgJvqPD_BwE at Doonside that has native animals only bar a couple of peacocks strutting around. That's about 45 to 50 K west of Sydney.

To show you what Scouter1 was speaking about check out the real estate at Mosman here https://www.realestate.com.au/buy/pr...rounding=false

Lane Cove CP is not too bad a drive from Taronga but there is also the option to take a train from North Ryde station (about 700m walk) to Wynyard, then back to Circular Quay and take the ferry to Taronga.

Seniors can can travel on Sydney trains, buses or ferrys for a max of $2.50 a day. (Bit of a hassle for interstaters to get an Opal card but well worth it if you're spending any time in Sydney. Also my $2.50 max a day may not include the Taronga ferry and is from our last visit nearly a year ago.)

You can forget staying at Narrabeen in January mate.

Without knowing how old you children are makes suggesting places difficult.

One place to avoid is the "famous" Bondi Beach. Most Sydney siders can't see what the attraction is.

Places to go...depends how long you are staying I guess. North Head at Manly has spectacular views of the harbour back to Sydney. West Head about an hour north of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River mouth is in the National Park again with great views. La Perouse around an hour south of Sydney on Botany Bay is on the opposite side of the bay where Cook landed and more picturess.

And of course there are the Blue Mountains about 90 minutes west of Sydney. Echo point has sensational views of the Jamieson Valley, The Three Sisters and towering sandstone walls.

Ten minutes from Echo Point is http://www.scenicworld.com.au/

Others will chip in with other places.

https://www.nrmaparksandresorts.com.au/sydney-lakeside/ might be a better option than Lane Cove as it's just on the other side of The Spit.

It's around 16K from Narrabeen to the Spit. As I said I in a previous post I don't think there is a hope in hell of getting in there in January as it's 100 or so metres from the beach.

That’s the narabeen option already mentioned. And as already mentioned will be unlikely to have availability in January but would probably be worth a call to be sure either way. I wouldn’t describe Narrabeen as “just the other side of the Spit” but it is on the North Shore and relatively close given other options alternatives and would be a good choice if available.
