MK Triton 2.8TD Fuel Issues

My Mk copped a belly full of unleaded at a local servo and stopped. I had it tilt trayed home... have drained the tank and refilled with clean diesel. I did the same with the filter flushed the petrol mix out with clean diesel, let it drain, refilled it with clean diesel and refitted it. It still doesn't run but will do so briefly then stop. On removing the filter again I noticed there was no fuel in the filter.

Before I send it off to a mechanic can anyone fill me in on the fuel system from tank to the filter. I wondered if there was a lift pump near or in the tank or whether the fuel is sucked up from the tank and through the filter by the injector pump.

Any hints on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a hand pump on the top of the filter housing?
When the system has been drained you usually need to prime it, either by a rubber bulb (my Terracan Diesel had this) or by a small pump / button on the top of the filter (my Pajero has this)

Thanks for the response. The filter head is bog standard no primer. I think I will get a new head asap .
