We did a day trip from Daylesford to Castlemaine during the Australia Day long weekend.
The route ran across the Hepburn regional park, Dry Diggings state forest, Upper Loddon state forest and Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park.
Other than taking a wrong turn in Dry Diggings state forest resulting in cutting the trek about 10km short, I'd say it was a day well spent with the family.
Kids took turns playing the role of navigator. Map source: 4WD Treks Close to Melbourne 3rd Edition.
PS. I should have done this trip during the wet season because this being the summer, all the creak crossings and fords were bone dry
