    Oil Change

    Hi,
I have done most of my mechanical repairs & maintenance on my cars, but I have just bought my first Diesel. Never worked on one.

My 09 NT has only 77,000km on it & I want to keep it in prime condition. It has only been serviced by MM so far but I want to do what I can to save money.

What oil & filters are people using?

    Thanks

    Steve

    Hi Ticky,

There are many posts on here regarding oil and filter choices.
I find it best to use google to search for threads, just add the blue text at the end to limit your search on this site only.

    pajero nt filters site:www2.pajeroclub.com.au

I use filters from these guys...have always been reliable and seem like a good price.
link to their ebay listing... http://tinyurl.com/nyclgnm

The drain bolt in the oil filter is great, so much less mess.

As for oil I use Penrite HPR Diesel 15. It is semi synthetic I believe and while I have an NS I have removed my DPF so do not require low ash oil.

The early NT's had a passive DPF setup I think and I am not sure if that required a low ash oil so check your manual to make sure.

I prefer to take the whole fuel bracket assembly off the firewall and change the fuel filter on the bench. I find it easier to drain once out of the car.

I hold the fuel lines in an old plastic peanut butter jar or something similar with those lockable pliers just to catch any drips. i have spilt a bit of diesel under there before and find the smell gets into the cabin through the ventilation.

    Hope this helps a bit.

      Hi Steve

Like said above do a search and you’ll find heaps about oil on this site. I have an NP Di-D (2003) and I have been using Valvoline Super Diesel for years – this stuff ...

Valvoline™ is a leading global producer, distributor and brand of high quality lubricants and specialised automotive, racing, commercial and industrial solutions. Valvoline products, services and programs result from our ongoing commitment to improve maintenance, add performance and reduce ownership cost for vehicle owners and businesses. Find premium solutions for your needs here on this site.

Your vehicle is a bit newer than mine and maybe you need a slightly different oil however.

As for filters, you can get ripped off easily. I’ve used Donaldson filter which are pretty good but I mainly use Sakura which are sold by lots of spare parts places - they have a factory in one of the Asian countries. From what I am told by people in the industry, many brands of filters come out of the same factory with just the brand names changed on them.

      Cheers

Thank you Eebwan & Ghendo for the info you have supplied to me, very much appreciated.

From your two posts, I have already come to realise this question is right up there with "How long is a piece of string"

I didn't think I needed to ask about Filters, I was just going to use Ryco. I have always used Ryco. But as I said in my first post, I know nothing about this engine & I am relying on this forum to help me make the right decisions.

I was thinking of using this http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Die...fe_Engine_Oil/

Wondering if anyone has good or bad things to say about it. I know its a bit pricey but cheaper than paying MM to change it for me.

Thanks to the people who have already answered.

          Hi,
I would say to first work out if yours has a DPF or not then choose the oil
I use on my 2009 NT

you will probably get lots of different answers as peoples opinions differ
You will need 10 litres (actually 9.8L I think) of oil for a change
Supercheap has the above brand 10L for $90-$100 and less during a sale

Check your Owner's Manual for the correct oil spec for your car. This should help you confirm whether you have the dreaded DPF & need low ash oil or not.

You will get many different oils recommended. I use Valvoline Synpower Full Synthetic 5w40. I believe in buying the best oil & filters you can afford from a long standing reputable brand.

If you are an RAA member, Repco have 20% off storewide during February. Also check the catalogues from all auto stores, as they often discount oil much more than this (buy before you need it when really cheap).

Yay, someone that thinks as I do.

              100% agree.

MM oil filter around $50. Others from $12 to $35. Oil from $30 for 5 litres to close on $70 for 5 litres.

Mine has run Valvoline Full Synthetic MST 5w/30 since the first oil change and always genuine MM filters. Costly? Yep but so was the price of the Pajero.

Ticky, I use Nulon fully synthetic and genuine filters in my NT. My chioce, I know you can get cheaper filters but the original oem was designed for the engine. Your choice what you use. I have used Ryco on other cars and haven't had a problem I am sure they all do what they are supposed to do. Change the engine oil and filter every 10,000 km and fuel filter every 20,000 km.
I clamp the fuel inlet so the fuel doesn't drain back prior to removing the fuel filter and this makes bleeding the system much easier and quicker. As Typan said use the best you can afford, oil and filters are cheap compared to an engine destroying itself. I keep an eye out for the oil specials in the super cheap catalogue and buy it when on special.
You will get many answers check them all out and make up your own mind.
                Regards Allan.

I decided to go with Nulon 5W30 Full Synthetic suitable for DPF

I'm not exactly sure if mine has a DPF. In the owners manual, everything related to the DPF has a white sticker stuck over it which would indicate this was done because the vehicle has no DPF but the books where already printed.

                  Mine is an 09

I also went with Ryco Filters. Ryco are a reputable brand and they claim to be at least as good as genuine or better. They have been around for a long time

Check your truck's build date Steve. From memory, if it's a post Aug/Sept 2009 build date then it should not have DPF. MMA should be able to confirm based on VIN # if necessary.

Check out filter packs from western filters Sydney. About 80 bucks for air, fuel and oil. All very good quality.
