Challenger on North East Jeep Track

    Hi All

With the broken arm mending from a mountain bike disaster revisited the North East and did a track up from Weldborough to shake the cobwebs out before revisiting the Pyengana Jeep Track. Did most on day one but due to late start left the last 1.5 kilometres to the next day. Just some idea of the track in three spots. One or two areas you just have to keep momentum up and you have only one line so close your eyes and hope you have enough clearance traction and that large thump on the bumper bar is no more than a scratch.

The track is on the upper end of a Challenger's ability and you can expect some damage if the vehicle slips. The last bog hole does have a way around but a winch is still a very good idea even in a Tassie dry summer. After rain a winch almost mandatory to avoid extreme momentum.

    Anyway, here is the link.

And another link from November 2015 where weather defeated diff lockers on a wet muddy day. Struck some young blokes that had a different approach on that hill.

    Cheers

Started out good but then I couldn't watch, why must you all add music to these clips. I want to hear the vehicle working and people screaming.

The first trip was with the Zook in tow. The second part we left the Zook behind.

Lot of money has been expended on both vehicles to improve them off-road but still look pretty much standard when on the street. The Zook has had a mild lift and is running BFG Muddies in the taller size. The Challenger has Maxxis muddies in the next profile up, and mild lift as well.

You can get a good idea of traction control that works on the Suzuki versus the front and rear diff locks fitted to the Challenger. Both are manuals with remarkably closely match gear ratios.

Will put together a video of the first trip where in the rain we failed on the hill climb, and some young bucks attempt at the same climb.

Yes, it is great to use the vehicles as designed and modified for. I feel the real need for the lower transfer case gear as bit challenging balancing the vehicle on the clutch while concentrating on navigating around obstacles.

The bog holes are getting worse as 37" monster tyred 4x4 are making more and more tracks impossible for mild 4x4s. Next video will show the mindset of that mob. Even though their vehicles are not monster trucks, yet.

Other video posted on the opening post. That one shows mud and steep slope means diff locks are not going to do the job.

True, I just like to actually hear how hard or otherwise the vehicle is working. it gives me a better picture of what the conditions are like.

It's a bit like going to a Top Fuel drag meeting with no sound or a sound track instead of the vehicle noise. You don't get the atmosphere.

When editing videos things like fast forward and cutting and joining to remove the stop bits makes sound disjointed. Actually, it is amazing how much time a vehicle remains stopped in tricky situations. Even ones driven by "pedal to the metal" mob.

Playing with volume settings to allow some sound through but again tricky given we have many recording devices. iPhone, Virb, GoPro, Panasonic waterproof camera, Canon camera and now a Panasonic video recorder.

Like anything, the more you do the better you get at it.

                  Cheers
