Checking valve clearances

Gday I am a new comer to this site. Have a 03 NP DID done 170k and would like to know how hard it is to check the valve clearances and is there a lot invloved? I have read on other threads here to replace the chain guide tensioner also are they very involved or a straight unbolt and rebolt on the new one. I am fairly mechanically minded and do most of my own work. Any advice would be grateful.

From old forum.

If you search here you can find a number of posts with information.

- Take plastic cover off
- take egr feedback pipe off
- take valve cover off
and then adjust

If cool/cold use a screwdriver/shifter to turn the engine over via alternator - MAKE SURE YOU TURN IT IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION!!.

Hey thanks Marquis, looked through the numerous posts there and very very helpful. Has given me the confidence to have a go myself. I suspected it wasn't that difficult but just wanted to make sure.

Getting the actual clearance right can be a little fiddly, but at least these have adjusters rather than shims. Make sure the feeler gauge is square on to the cam lobe / follower as you insert / withdraw it. If you have it off-square at all it will feel like it is dragging. When I did mine recently on a cool engine I set them with just a hint of drag on the feeler gauge. All seems good and it quietened it down somewhat as a couple had too much clearance.
