    Camping west or Brisbane. Suggestions?

    OK,

Come on Queenslanders, bit of a tip required. We are heading off shortly on a trip that takes us from Adelaide, through Melbourne, Jindabyne, Canberra, Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast. Then out west to Longreach, Birdsville and home via the Birdsville track. Will have an off-road camper trailer following close behind (I hope). We do have it pretty well all mapped out, but don't have any local knowledge of interesting spots to stay to the west of Brissy. Plan to take a week to get from Gold Coast to Birdsville. Originally had planned stop-overs in places like Toowoomba, Roma, Emerald etc on our trek west, but figure would like to take in some decent scenery in the area, while still making reasonable head-way in our westward journey. The caravan parks in the towns seem just a little, well BORING!

Any suggestions or ideas, greatly appreciated.

around the Roma/Injune section there are a number of national parks like Carvarvon Gorge, Expedition, Lonsome etc that are all pretty good stops for a night or two.

You will need to make sure they are open via the DERM parkalerts site.

A mate of mine stayed at Darlington Park, near Beaudesert over the weekend. $5 per person and dog friendly. He said it was quite nice. It's a scenic drive there from the Gold Coast over Mt Tamborine, Canungra etc. Check out O'Reilly's treetop walk etc on the way.

The Bunya Mountains, west of Toowoomba are quite a nice spot. Close by to the Jondaryan Woolshed. Camp at Bunya. http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/bun...s/camping.html

Then perhaps check out the thermal hot springs at Mitchell on your way to Carnarvon Gorge for a couple of days. http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au...-spa/index.cfm & http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/parks/car...e/camping.html

Emerald and the sapphire gem fields are worth a look, as is Barcaldine's Tree of Knowledge. Not sure if the tree is still alive, I think someone poisoned it a few years back.

Thanks for the replies. Some good ideas there. So far have picked out Broadwater CP as a nice looking stop over and then Carnavon NP as a potential stop for a couple of nights.

Looks like the DERM link might prove useful, Thanks

Depending on what time of day your are aroound Winton, there is a awesome campsite at Old Cork, you head down towards Lark Quarrry the dinosaur stampeed and chuck a right about 3 ks north and head past Cork itself, cuts out 200 odd k of BORING cattle country and then you head down the Kennedy development road to Boulia and then on to Birdsville. Camping at Birdsville just outside of town on the Diamantina as well. Have a feed at the pub thats for sure and a camel pie at the bakery, also make sure you do the run out to Red Spectacular sunset.

Highly recommend this part of the world! The Arcadia Valley is a great place to camp (nice little school too).
Expedition, Lonesome and Lake Nuga Nuga are all open and looking good. The mount moffat section of canarvon NP has road closures at the moment.

Sounds like a cracker of a trip!
