    Time or distance servicing?

My April 2014 NW has been dealer serviced, by the previous owner, dutifully on time based servicing. That is at 12/24/36/48 months. So the 60,000k service was carried out at 48 months and 44,741k's. The next A service is scheduled @55,000k's on the windscreen sticker. Oil, filter and the usual inspections. I do not think it is possible to get the vehicle back on track to distance servicing and it has 12 months warranty left to run. I am inclined to have the next service done when the distance clocks up, by a service agent outside the dealer network. That will be the last inside the warranty period. I will then be guided by factory service intervals. Has anyone else serviced there vehicle exclusively by time based servicing?

Time is a very important thing as the fluids have a time limit ...

NB best to get the last service done at the Dealership to go over the car for any items that need attention and update all firmware ( you yourself should also see if there is anything you can claim on for the warranty while you have it) ...

If you want to maintain your factory warranty, it's what you HAVE to do. There is a maximum number of km between services, AND a maximum period of time. The service has to be done at whichever comes first.

It's never an issue on my vehicles, as the kms come up in less than 12 months, but my missus' ASX gets done every 12 months, and that is always less than the 15,000km interval.

For what it's worth, my current ride gets used for a fair bit of 4WDing, so I also do an intermediate service (oil and filter and check-over) halfway between the 15,000km interval factory services.

The services now have to be calculated from the date & kms of the last service (at least within warranty - after warranty ends it is up to you, but remember statutory & any other warranty may still apply after new car warranty ends). You won't be able to get back onto the kms shown in the book unless you do a bunch of extra service items to effectively re-set it, but that is really just wasting money.

As the last service was the 60k/48 months @ 44,741km the next scheduled service per the book should be the 75k/60 months @ 59,741km (or 60 months, whichever comes first). Unless something went awry in the earlier service timings or I'm missing something? Looks to me like someone put the wrong kms on the service sticker?

PS - this assumes normal servicing only, ie, not used in severe conditions, etc. (refer book)

I have an issue with time vs distance for my car.
I just bought a 2014 NW and it only has 39,000 km on it.

Looks to me like because of the low km's , the last time it was serviced they did the 36 Months (45,000) service when in fact the car had only done 33,000.
All okay I suppose but the 36 Months/ 45,000 service does NOT include the fuel filter which was supposed to be done on the 24 Month/ 30,000 service. Because they did the service based on time and not kms now I have a car where the fuel filter looks like it was not replaced because effectively they 'skipped' the 30,000 km service. Work that one out....

As far as im aware the Fuel filter should be changed every 15k and at every service.

Nope, the book says every 30K. Does seem too far for sure...

Just a little more info. I am doing a 8,000k trip starting in early August so I have decided to get the Paj serviced before we leave. It has been 12 months since its last service, and the dealer is insistent that it is due, despite the k's not having been accumulated. $1200 thank you very much for the next scheduled service in the book, 60 months/75,000 including a physical tappet check. I visited a local 4WD service center that has a very good reputation and received a quote for $400 for a stamped log book service. With only 55,000k's on the clock he thinks that the tappets should be OK.

As previously stated it us either/or when it comes to servicing.....it's what comes first kms or time. Just about every manufacturer states this as part of servicing requirements.

My wifes golf is similar.....it hits the recommended time well before the kms. Thus it just had its 4 year service but only has 50000kms not the average 600000kms for this time.

I wouldn't get to hung up on it bud.....just a fact of vehicles nowadays.

I am not worried about the the fact that the service needs to be done, more the price the dealer wanted. I am not selling a kidney to keep the dealer in profit.

My 2012 NW has only 28000ks on clock this time schedule service is a con. I service my own vehicle I do change filters and oil every 7500 Ks, fuel filter every 15000.ks. Any complicated work eg tappets or transmission I get done by diesel mechanic or transmission specialist. You cant tell me that car dealers who sometimes have vehicles for sale into their yards for very long times check the dates of services and service on time. My local Mitsi dealer hasn't got a good reputation, i stay well clear of them.
