    most awnings have a bolt which has a flat ,thin head(T bolt?) which is sized to slide in a groove in a cross rail.The cross rail is supported at both ends so does not exrt any torque(twist) on the roof rail and halves any load on each rail.
    There is a thread here somewhere with a discusssion on this .It would be pretty easy to make up a flat mount with some u bolts to take a couple of normal bolts instead os the T bolts.The roof rails them selves are only plastic i think
