Default Anyone done the Old Ghan Line?

I am doing the Hay River Track next month but I am already thinking about my next trip. I am interested in maybe doing the Old Ghan Line. Has anyone done it? I would be interested in any reports or ideas. I am very interested in photograghy and there seems to be lots of interesting things on this track.

Assuming you mean south from Alice springs to finke past chambers pillar then down past mt dare n Oodnadatta then onto maree. I've been that way about 5 years ago. It's a very nice run. Chambers pillar is stunning. And all the old ruins are interesting and all have a board with info. In some sections your actually traveling on top of where the train would of run. I think you can get lots of PDF info from the link roadhouse website. Also it's worth a side track to the Peake township. It's on most maps. I thought this was better than farina. Also the painted desert is a good detour. There's a camp site at Hamilton station. And arkaringa station if you sidetrack to the painted desert.

Not a hard run.

Btw have a great trip on the hay river. We crossed east to west last august and I'd decided to go back before I got home

Also how much fuel did you use on the Hay River track? Also what sort of vehicle do you have?
I am working on 140-150 Lts to do Hay River including Poeppel Cnr.

Sorry my reply was prob a bit misleading we went east west across the desert qaa French knowles rig I used 107 Birdsville to mt dare I did 604 kms. People I spoke to said the hay is easier and smoother than the qaa/French line.
So I averaged 17.8 lph on my crossing. On the hwy I'm around 12-13 if that helps
I have a 05 v6 challenger manual. If anyone can tell me how
To load video from my iPhone I can post a few videos of the qaa line dunes cause I can't work it out. Out from Birdsville west the first 3 dunes were low range for me the rest I used 4h and first gear.

To upload direct from phone; install the Tapatalk app, open and search for the forum, sign in, find this thread and upload direct. I have not tried video but it is supported.
