How do we know what the conditions were like when they initially drove through that way? They were bogged for a while according to the article.

They've had a bit of rain around the area, and I used to live in Bathurst and actually run along the side of the river exactly where the Pajero was bogged. That river can rise quite significantly in the space of 15 minutes.

I would imagine that no one would deliberately drive through river flood water like that. I'd suggest the water's risen.
