Hi Mike, thanks for clarifying.

So on previous models where they don't include this sensor, is the alternator always overcharging the battery? Besides the ECU being pissed that it cannot see this sensor, I assume there's no risk in running without the sensor as previous models did?

I would be careful about using a smart alternator without the appropriate controls. The reason is that without the control signals, the alternator will probably put out maximum voltage all the time. This could be up to 18 volts, which is too much for the car's electrical system to handle. The old system used a voltage regulator which limited the voltage going to the battery and did have some control of the alternator output. As far as I know, the smart alternators are designed to limit the voltage that the alternator produces so that it doesn't over charge the system and also to limit the energy used (and thereby increase fuel economy). Manufacturers don't use these things just because they are pretty - they have a reason and we don't always know the background behind the choice of equipment.
