Auto Gear lever surround - NT auto

Has anyone replaced the gear lever surround (brushed metal finish) on an NT auto, mine has a few scratches on it and would like to replace it but MM quoted $550 as you need to replace the plastic section underneath that the cup holders fit in. From what I can see the section I am after just clips on on the top, maybe there is more to it?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Scott

I scratched the finish on mine the first time I vacuumed the car - The finish is soft enough that the plastic vacuum attachment scratched it! It's had a couple more scratches added to it since then.

Not worth $550 to fix - I'll put up with it.

Would it be hard to get it spray painted by a panel shop using a tough modern auto paint. You might get away with that for around $100.

I would make a template and then using a hobby scalpel cut out from a sheet of contact and then stick it over. Might be fiddly bit a little low impact weekend activity. Should be able to find a silver contact easy enough. I would be looking for some carbon fibre look contact.

                    I'd just paint it myself.

Easy enough to pull out theough I think you'd have to mask off some bits. Bit of wet and dry to add some grip, nice primer and then spray. I'd actually use model paints designed for plastics so a trip to the local hobby shop should get what you need.

If they have it, there's a primer called Mr Surfacer which is fantastic (I suspect it's a repackaged Dupont auto primer) and if you don't have an airbrush then a rattle can of Tamiya or Gunze Sangyo Mr Hobby Colour as the top coat. Stand the colour spray bomb in hot water for a minute before you spray to increase pressure a bit. Might want to practice in some scrap first but you should be able to near duplicate the OEM finish if not the exact colour.
