Default Idle speed Higher than it should be?

Hey guys,

Just bought my first Pajero, old car with a few problems but lots of character and has already done some trips on the beach. One of the things that I am trying to get fixed with the car is getting the idle speed to be consistant, it seems to sit at around 2000 RPM when the engine is hot, but on 1100-1200 when the engine is cold. What would be causing this and is there a way for me to fix it? There is no issue as of yet, but changing into drive with the engine already at a higher RPM than normal seems like a very fast way to strain the transmission.

Any input is much appreciate!

TMO

Yep, that sounds very high! I've got the 4D55t diesel in mine and cold it idles at 500rpm, hot at 750rpm. Admittedly I think mine is idling a bit low and probably due for an adjustment, I think 750 cold would be on the money!

It's normal for the idle to increase a bit as the engine heats up (at least I hope it is or every old diesel I've owned has been buggered! )

I've got the 3l V6 in mine, took it for a drive today after putting in a new radiator (and some other goodies) and still sitting at around the 2000rpm mark. I'll check the temp sensor on the front of the engine tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.
