      All sorted now.

Was just held a bit by some slight surface rust.

        Valve timing

Hi all I have a NL 3.5 lt need help on the valve timing, the motor has been pulled down [not by me] the crank mark is lined up and number 1 piston is TDC so where should be the valves be on the right bank can i just move the crank forward and lower the pistons so that I can turn the cams without damage to the valves. So once the right bank is set will the left be firing on number 2 cyclinder then 3,4,5,6 ?
And what would happen if the pistons where not put back in the right order?

        Cheers

1 and 4 are twined, so when 1 is at tdc and starting ignition stroke if everything is lined up right 4 should be at tdc just closed exhaust valve and about to open the intake one

Don't worry about the firing order, just get all the timing marks lined up for the number one cylinder and the timing belt on, then all the rest will play follow the leader.

Not sure about your engine, but my old 3.5L 6G74 had these numbers on moulded on the intake manifold. I thought it was the firing order, but it turned out to be the cylinder numbers for the coil packs. Once I lined the numbers up with the appropriate leads, it fired up perfectly. It took my wife to point that one out to me - how embarrassing!
