Gen 3 auto gearbox rebuild, urgent advice needed!!

    Hi all,

Last night was not a good night, sounds like the planetary gears have given up and it was a sad tow home.

So getting it towed to a trans specialist for fault finding and rebuild.

    A few questions though:
    1. He doesn't like welding the pins (common failure point) in as he thinks the heat can warp things. Instead he peens them (centre punch or something). Swears they will never come out. Any thoughts?
    2. He says the valve body rebuild comes with an upgrade kit and the torque converter is also rebuilt. Wholesale automatics offer a rebuilt HD valve body and TC. I am curious to know what the difference might be or whether they are charging a premium for the same thing.

    Cheers,
    Pete

    Hi Pete

How many kilometers on it, when it let go?

I have the identical Pajero to you with 178,000 on it and the gearbox is a constant source of concern to me as the car ages and the tranny rebuild cost begins to equal the cars value

    Cheers Glenn

230,000, and yes everyone I ring says they know them well and the gears are the main issue

I really don't know whether to check a second hand box in it for about 2k installed and sell it for 15k and then upgrade to an NT for about another 15k.
Or spend the 5k on the rebuilt box and then another 5k at any time when the injector pump gives up. Then I really have to keep the car!

Toying with the idea of dropping a 2nd hand box in and selling it, cutting my losses and upgrading to an NT.

From what I can workout, I should be able to get 14k-15k for mine and about 30k for a NT with lowish kms. Just waiting to hear back what a second hand box installed will be worth.

Just frustrating as it is a very well sorted car and just had a brand new bar put on a week ago!!

This is why I keep fixing them its not the cost of the car its all the work it takes to turn the into what we want
Over capitalized NK.I'm running out of things to add to it it died , now a SWB NJ with all the good stuff from the NK on it .

Peining pin ends to prevent them drifting out is a widely used assembly method in mechanical engineering. I haven't done it for an automotive application, but have experience in rebuilding large printing press drivelines using this process. They handle a lot more power/torque and run for much longer than a Pajero...

The heavy duty valve body from Wholesale Automatics was a worthwhile upgrade on the Aisin A/T on my NT https://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum...8&postcount=26

            Cheers,

Is this legit? When I was reading up before buying my NP, everything I read said the auto boxes are quite strong and should last the life of the car with regular servicing. Now this suggests they’re a known problem? My NP has 220,000km on it.

LOL I was under that impression as well! Turns out I was wrong! Every trans place I rang said exactly the same thing!

Haha nah mate. Probably saw it spoken on forums by people purporting to know a lot about Pajeros but probably don’t. I work in development approvals and people always say “I was told I could build such and such big development on this site”.. I ask them “Who told you that, the real estate agent? Them: “Actually.. yeah.” So I ain’t quite that stupid.

Auto Trans in Hampstead Gardens. Had some very good feedback from people who have used them and they have been really honest and helpful in getting prices, suggestions and advice.

I still see a lot of pajeros around with that gearbox, so they cannot be that bad are they?. Seems to be bit of a lottery with them when buying secondhand. But that is secondhand cars all over I guess.
If you can't afford new and don't want a corolla, then you must take a punt. Hell at least it's not a new Merc, those things are rubbish by all the reports I have seen.

Well Mitsi obviously realised their mistake, as the stopped using them in the NT onwards. The NM, NP and NS all used the Jatco box, which suffered from the pin failure issue. Before and after used the Aisin box which is a superior box. The Aisin box still seems prone to the pin failure, but appears to be a better box other than that.

I can afford the rebuild, it's just getting to that edge of how much do I sink into an older car before cutting my losses and upgrading... never an easy decision.

How much would it cost to have the pin problem fixed before it actually failed? A couple grand?
