Years ago, I had a Triumph 2000, and one day was driving to work on a very icy road. The car started to slide tail first off camber into the gutter. I then realised that it was the engine braking effect in 2nd gear causing the same effect as the handbrake. A quick blip on the throttle had the car back on line and then I had to keep it in 2nd gear because it was to icy and I needed some braking, but as soon as the hill eased out, I was back in 3rd gear. Handbrake is the last thing I would use.
