    Valve clearance DiD

Hi all, I have been searching for the actual valve clearance figure for my DiD. Can't seem to find it in this forum or in the 4M41 service manual on the web. What are the figures that are used ? I have had a mechanic say that the valve clearances were "self adjusting" in the DiD - I reckon thats bull**it as not only is there a thread on adjusting the DiD valve clearances in this forum (no specs on the actual figures used though), the service manual clearly shows an adjustment screw on the rocker arms. Thanks for your help

    Hi Ben
The Exhaust is .15mm, the Intake is .1mm.
To get the rocker cover off, its best to remove the EGR ( 17Nm) and rocker cover ( 3.0Nm)
    At TDC compression No1 Adjust EX 1 & 3 and Intake 1 & 2
    At TDC compression No 4 Adjust Ex 4 & 2 and Intake 4 & 3
One thing Do not turn the engine backwards it will break the timing chain tensioner, It will also help to remove the glow plugs.
The book quotes every 15K I think thats an overkill I think 45K is more practical
    cheers

      Thanks Muzza,

so 0.004 and 0.006 thou inch eh ? It'll be interesting to see what this one has in it - seems the mechanics which have been servicing it the past 100,000 km have never done them ! Just confirms my theories about mechanics.

If your mechanic said they are self adjusting then find another mechanic.

Just did my valves - took an hour this time.

The clearances are in the service manual along side the bit that details on how to adjust.

As brett said previous post - the mech is full of it.

On all mechanics, or just the "not so Pajero savvy" mechanics you have been using?

1 is at the front and both valves will be closed when it is on the compression stroke.

I dont when I do mine. At 18:1 compression they are not too hard to turn over - just do it slowly. I use a long ratchet on the front nut of the alternator.

The only reason you would remove the glow plugs would be to make it easier to turn the motor over - diesels have high compression and removing the plugs mean no compression.

Right I'm with you. I have a manual so I jack up the drivers wheel and get a mate to turn it forward whilst in gear to turn the engine.

Is your mate built like the Incredible Hulk? I dont think that will work and you need to be quite accurate in where you rotate it to. Try a spanner on the crank or alternator. Not the cams.
