    Transmission stuffed

    Hi

In July 2015 i bought a 2001 nm pajero for $6200.00. Last week I was told the transmission is stuffed and will cost $5000.00 to replace.
I have already put in after market front wheel bearings and a new rack. The car is already raised and has great tires and a very tidy interior. The lights are awesome with LEDS both front and rear.

What should I do, I have already been advised not to get second hand transmission.

    Cheers

I guess this is a tough decision. I'd be thinking about the k's it has done and a trans from a wreck with low k's.

If it were me I (I am a mechanic) would go with a low k one from a wreck just make sure that it was not hit to bad from the front ( engine pushed back) as for the manual change you will need the tail shaft and most likely remove the trans ECU, straight swaps are a whole lot easier.

That would be the Jatco transmission. Proved to not be near as long lasting as the Aisin they replaced. There is a good reason MM went back to the Asian auto in later models. Previous owner of your NM might have suspected something and sold before it happened. I feel your pain.

Secondhand one for sure. Not sure I could justify spending $5k fixing a $6k car...

Second hand one, else I'd just buy a replacement car.

Have the planetary gears fallen off, as seems fairly common?

Yep, Pajero NM here...full service and Transmission carked it at 180,000km early last year...bit the bullet an paid $4800 for new transmission inclusive of labour...Thought it was still cheaper than buying a newer car given I'd rate it to run another 150,000. Hard call.

Same thing happened to me - a refurbed one or replacement was about $5000 NZ all up, ended up going with a used one with 180,000km on it, had it fully checked out and fitted at local transmission specialist for $2200 all up

However....it was the second time the transmission was up for replacement

First used transmission (35,000km claimed by wrecker) - died after 4000km of use - $5000 NZ all up - dropped planetary gear set

Second used transmission - (180,000km claimed by wrecker) - still going strong - $2200 NZ all up ..... however torque convertor has a slight shudder whereas the first didn't

....Going used is a bit of a gamble, for me I got it right the second time round...which wasn't ideal, especially as it was the same time the cambelt, water pump, tyres and idle control motor were all up for replacement too!

If you're going used then it would pay to find a transmission in a paj that you can test drive (sounds stupid but the second transmission I got came out of a running/driving paj being parted out because "the panels and engine are perfect..." and/or get it fully checked out, some mechanics may rip it open and check it if they supply the part but this usually comes with a higher cost

All the best...if you solve it first time round then you're doing better than me!
2003 NP Pajero 3.5 V6 Petrol - currently stock... except for transmission breathers which were done when the THIRD transmission was fitted

                      stuffed Transmission

Thanks for the sympathy folks, i appreciate it.

As for the question of Warning, yep I had some. Returned from Holidays overseas and the car didn't respond immediately to the pedal, and then would jump into gear. Drove for 2 days like that. Then took it in for a check up.

I have no idea what to do at the moment....just sitting on it for the time being....maybe I should sell this for scrap.

                        Hey Rager

I have got plenty of sympathy for your situation too and its a very tough call for you to make. This is a scenario we can all be facing soon as NM and NP are getting on to 15 years old and the repair cost can equal or exceed the entire cars value
If you could get 2 grand for it "as is" might be best to do that and just take your medicine.
Your post has almost convinced me to sell mine

No real signs...and I was told that there was bits of metal and stuff in the bottom of the case.
