If want to use a laptop then the best option may be Ozzie Explorer, which is a very advanced package but you'll need a mouse GPS unit to actually provide yor GPS poitioning data.

You may also be able to load OziEplorer via a SIM car onto you existing GPS unit too, but you;ll still need to purchase the maps for it...

If you have other i-phone or tablet then more options open up to you...

There other options such as The HEMA navigator option, which apears to be very good but just not sure on the level of detail of general roads as opposed to the off-road tracks which I believe are very well done.

Or using an i-phone or preferably an i-pad you can use other apps such as VMS or Memory-Map (which I use).

With any map, you'll need to purchase the maps, and depending on what level of detail you'll need you can get gown to 1:25k highly detaild topoghraphic maps which is what I use.

I ended up going with the i-pad (just make sure you get the 3G version as that has a GPS antennae built in and you don't need any sim card for GPS). Nice big screen you can use for without glasses for the older eyes and has a free matching pp for your PC where you can do your pre-trip planning... And you can also do in-car video @720 p, an example is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W61lCpkxobA

Hopefully this has given you a few options/idea...

      Cheers,
      Andrew
PS. I'm rambling the drugs from the operation are warming off... lol...

Don't need to purchase maps for ozi, you can make your own

And via SD card, not sim
If I agreed with you, then we would both be wrong

I had uploaded quite a few maps for Ozi but they got killed due to not being downloaded at all over several months.
You can find some Hema maps to download in other forums but not sure about the coverage and how old they are - mine are still from 2008.
The easiest option to get to new maps is GoogleOzi or Google2ttmaps as well as Mobac.
The first two are basically the same only that one makes maps for Ozi and the other goes one step further and creates ECW maps.
Mobac in the 1.8 and 1.9 version (not the latest!!) can download maps from Google, Yahoo and Nearmap which are the only usable sources for Australia.
To get more than one GPS program installed and working on these chinese system you have two options:
                      1. put each software with the maps on a seperate SD and adjust the path to start it in the menu of the GPS (settings)
                      2. use your own home made menu to start whatever you want

There is a "unlocking menu with games and additional software available - I'm not saying the name here!!
Don't play with it, don't install it as it will most likely brick your device!!!
If there is some interest I will upload my menu and everyone can adjust it to his liking.
It replaces the GPS program as defined in the GPS menu, so instead of starting your software the GPS button starts the menu and from there you go ahead.
Monitor for battery, free memory and ram is included as well as icons for most GPS programs I ever had on my system.

The forum moved to new servers, so the link was no longer valid, but I fixed link in my last posting.
