Yeh, how come I didn't get offered cheap parts, maybe we have to buy the car and remove the parts ourself, maybe he thinks we lousy mechanics.

I found it interesting that I had the exact same PM on another forum today.

They're getting smarter, I suspect. Unless they're using another member's account to get access to the PM system. Just keep trying random passwords until one works? Can't see that they would have set up an account that far back for future spamming use.

A while ago I had an email saying I had a PM. When I signed in there was no PM. Can't remember who it was from but told Gus.

Today I received an email saying I had a PM from a member. The PM was genuine as it came with the email but there was no PM in my inbox.

I replied to this sender by email as he is a regular poster here.

BTW, my email address is not listed on here.

No, wasn't NewTriton. Another US based forum, but curiously running VBulletin too, so maybe a security hole there.

Simple enough, really. Just pick a member, any member, and try to log on. Use random passwords or password generating software and keep trying until you crack one. All automated, of course, but most people don't have very secure passwords and there are lists of the most common ones.

Spamming is big business and there's money in it, otherwise they wouldn't bother. It's just a game of numbers. So, they got banned, or at least that member did. They don't care - there are thousands of forums out there where they can get word out about their product.

Admins may know from IPs whether the logon was from a local address or overseas and should be able to see if that matched previous IPs used by that member. If it was an old account, some of that may have been lost in the changeover, I don't know, Dave and Gus would, I'd imagine, but won't bore us with details.

My son inlaw forgot his log in password for an older computer he has. His mate at work lent him a CD that searched the computer for his password.

                            Scary stuff.
