Default What is this thing in my engine bay?

Hi All.

I have been working on my 6G74 engine and taking my time and lots of photos along the way.

Can anyone tell me what the steel pipe with rubber cap is for in my engine bay? It's located at the back of the engine block above the bell housing.

Thanks.

First guess (without seeing more detail of the rubber cap) is a gearbox breather.

Default breather

Indeed, gearbox and diff breathers are all like that. The rubber boot stops dirt getting in. I extended mine up the fire wall to top, just under the bonnet.

That sounds like a good idea.

Thanks all.
