Hi,
Just picked up a 2003 NP Exceed with 104k (timing belt done at 75k) just over a month ago. Drove great for the first week, then the serpentine belt started to rub, and upon slowing down and stopping, it re-aligned itself (with a slight clunking sound accompanying momentarily as it re-aligned). So far I've replaced the serpentine drive belt, two top idler pulleys, fan pulley and just about to do the tensioner in the next couple of days (though tensioner seems to be working fine upon testing). I've also got a bit of excessive play in my power steering pump pulley, so probably looking at replacing entire pump, unless some of you would advise otherwise. The crank bolt is tight and no play or warping in the crank pulley, all very secure. Alternator pulley the same. The only thing that I can see now is the play (probably 10ml) that I've got in the power steering pump pulley. Belt is not slipping, no squeeling. Just momentarily will start to rub, then re-align itself, if you take it for a drive (usually only once, then no more, until you drive again)
One thing to mention is that the last mechanic (ultra tune) at 75k, 3 years back mounted the serpentine belt wrong (yes, not a miss print). As a result when it came time for me to check the tension, the tensioner line was sitting jammed against the top instead of between the lines (or for that matter below if the belt had stretched). At this stage I'm hoping that the problem will be fixed if/when I replace the power steering pump and pulley with a new secure one. Anybody else out there ever had this sought of a problem?
I should also mention, we are not currently driving the car much/if at all until we fix this, as I don't to risk more serious damage. I also had a mobile mechanic come and check it over, same diagnoses.
Has anybody else had this type of problem?
Forgot to mention that a/c compressor made no difference to the problem whether it was on or off.
Thanks,
Gregg
