Buying used NX ex Police Pajero warning sign?

    Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster here. I did used to have a 1993 NH diesel with the 2.5l, loved it to be bits but unfortunately had to get rid of it, after a few years driving a boring sedan (shock! Horror!) I am looking to get back into the Pajero club...

Like a few others I am looking at the ex police GLX5, with budget stretching about to $30k on road. I have read through the other threads and done a good search but couldn’t find anyone else with this question, so apologies if it has been asked elsewhere.

I took a nice MY17 for a drive today, 106,000km on the clock, full service docs showing car has been based out at Bourke, so hopefully all nice easy highway k’s. $27,989 asking price.

Loved the car and loved being back in a Pajero, the only problem was when I got the mrs to wind her up a little bit in a back street and check for any suspicious exhaust smoke or sounds, a few bits of what look like metal crud shot out the back of the exhaust. Exhaust seemed all clear other than a bit of the black smoke when the turbo let off, it’s just two or three pieces of metal came out.

I know from reading up that these cars have the DPF fitted in this year, I am thinking & hoping this is just a bit of built up crap being burnt off but am really not sure... there are no other warning signs to speak of and the car feels good, tight, and no oil leaks or worn
    /damaged components under.

Could any of you paj geniuses and oldhands shed some light on this?

Photo of one the bits of crap below, about 5-6mm across

I'd say that looks like part of a closed DPF.

Have a look at this link re buying ex-police paj's & to be honest I'd pop in somewhere ask a mechanic or a muffler place & ask as they can have a close up squiz at the bit you have; https://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum...ghlight=police

We have been very happy with our ex-police NT 2010, bought at 93k km now 225k km. So far basic servicing and 2 rear wheel bearings required. Full service info was available from the country service centre used.

Not sure exactly where you are but I had a quick poke around on Crasales and found quite a few Pajeros in Sydney around the 30K mark. Some are very close to the K's of the police one you are looking at. Plenty to choose from.
            Cheers, Mike.

Pickles Auction often has ex Police and or other Government cars for similar or less Km’s and <$30k.

Downside with them is you can not take them for a drive.

A month of so back there was a good looking non police 2018 NX GLX ex government, factory bull bar, tow bar, spare wheel lift and light bar with almost 50000kms on it for $32000. Almost snapped it up but went via a different path to a newer, much less Km’s at a higher price.

In the past I have found the government auctions good a 2002 Camry with 24000kms, sold last year with 440000kms great car no trouble with it. Recently a 2012 Discovery 4 with 105000kms now has 135000kms on it.
If you choose carefully at fixed price they can work out a bit cheaper with lower Kms.

I bought a 2018 NX with 100k on the clock, with tow bar, ARB Bull Bar, Winch and driving lights. $28k.
Drives great, you can tell it's been an ex cop car by the rub marks on the inner door trims.

They do a good job of de-installing all the police components as you would have expected there to be holes everywhere, but only 4 that i have found, and 2 of those are not visible. One thing that I did notice that they were a bit slack at putting in all the trim screws back in, not a big issue but found that there was a rattle and this was fixed by putting a screw in to its original hole.

Drives great, good service history and a bargain in my opinion.

                Ex.

I bought a 2016 NX Pajero 12 months ago with 90,000 showing. It was a 5 seater Police Forensics Vehicle based in Alexandra in Vic. It was for sale at a Toyota dealer in Melbourne, traded on a Cruiser . It was fully kitted with Smart Bar, tow pack , upgraded tyres , cargo barrier, fire extinguishers and exactly what we wanted . The full service record was available , and we rang the guy in Alexandra . He told me he was surprised it was traded as it had done no work and was perfect , but he was told the new policy was to withdraw the forensic vehicle from use . Essendon Fields Toyota fitted four new tyres , it had 12 months reg and we got it for $28,0000. It’s a gem . Pulls our 1500 kg van without any issues . Comfortable and seemingly bullet proof. The only minor complaint I have is the clunk of the heavy door as it shuts . Very economical too . We are country based so it’s mainly highway work even to go shopping, a 70km round trip . Such brilliant value compared to Cruiser , Jeep or Patrol . Old fashioned? Older technology ? Yes but so am I .

that is exactly why I have bought pajero last year while there were few other choices. I want something normal mechanic can fix instead of dealer or special shop only. Unless the dealership network covers the entire map. If I am in the middle of nowhere and I have to get a specialist to help, that's kidding me.

Just purchased an ex NSW Police 2016 NX Based in Cowra with 940000 ks on the clock. Still has new car warranty, got the local MM dealer to reflash the mmcs, carried out the $1 EGR mod and couldn’t be happier. Steel ARB Delux bar, Warn Magnum 10k winch and driving lights, towbar and brake controller and Falken Wildpeaks. Yes it’s a glx with rear seat delete, these were going to be removed anyway.

Only issue was a bent front bash plate and leaking intercooler. The dealer replaced the intercooler under stat warranty, I replaced the bash with a Boo’s. Awesome car. Great value for $28k imo. Lots of trim Xmas trees missing, I’ll fix this when I run the dual battery into the back.

Are you really saying it has done almost a million km in 4 years? That's about 650km every day.

Is that a genuine sensible question???

Taking a stab in the dark, I would assume Damon H made a simple typo & it has an unintentional extra ‘0’ - especially as he also mentions it still has new car warranty.

Hahaha. Imagine NSW Police keeping a vehicle till it hits nearly a million kays [emoji1787]

Buying used NX ex Police Pajero warning sign?

As Bruce mentioned, last October I took my ex NSW Police (MY16) up to Longreach, west along the Plenty Highway (very enjoyable leg of the trip), down to the red centre via the Mereenie Loop, then up and out to Rainbow Valley and Chambers Pillar (very rough corrugations on the CP road.. wife was ready to go home.. very pleased with the extent of dash rattle too.. not as bad as expected) then back home to Sydney via Adelaide. The Pajero didn’t miss a beat. Towed an off-road camper trailer. I bought it at a tick over 80,000km two years ago now, for around $31k from memory (with all the goodies.. ARB Deluxe bar, Lightforce spotties, Warn winch and a Brown Davis subfloor aux tank which has done very well with a full load of fuel and many, many hundreds of corrugations, by the way) and the Paj now has nearly 115,000km.

Not a single regret buying an ex cop. Not saying things won’t go wrong but as of today I’m happy with my purchase. Even found it on Google Streetview sitting outside its original cop shop a month before I bought it (as per the thread linked above).
