Uploading a Pic.

I tried to upload a pic to a new post that was used in a previous post and it was rejected as being attached to existing post.
Changed the file name and date to no avail. So what part of the file / Metadata is detected to prevent a "duplicate" upload. Does the upload software do a checksum on the file?

Remember the science demonstration of a table covered with mouse traps loaded with ping pong balls and the teacher drops a ping pong ball into the middle.
Well, the ball has been dropped.
