    Alternator pivot bolt

    Hi all,

Changing belts for the first time and need to loosen the alternator pivot bolt. It is a square head.

What did you use to loosen it? Standard socket? Can't find one to fit yet.... And to top it off shops are now shut.

Will be in trouble soon if it is not back together.

    Cheers,
    James

Had a better look - the pivot bolt appears to loosen via the nut at the rear.

Edit: still can't get at it. there is a cable at the rear in the way and I can't access the nut. Will put the new AC belt on and try again at weekend.

Decided to loosen the lock and adjuster bolts to see what happens!!

Lo and behold, I can pivot the alternator and get belts off. Is this normal that the pivot bolt is tight but I can force the alternator to move?

Thanks, hope I have given someone a laugh.

cheers Goodsy. Was checking manual here http://pajero.2de.ru/

Didn't see that page though. Resolution a bit small on here.

No stress. Put it all back together. Seems to be nicer. There was a lot of play in the old belts and they were seriously in bad shape. Alternator belts very bad.

Will look at the pivot nut at the weekend. Seems to be a pain in the ar$e to get at.

This is what is in the manual. I'm sure it can be done easier???

Thanks. I was able to do it without touching the pivot boly but feel I should be tightening it....

...I had to tighten my belts a couple of weeks ago and it was a complete pain in the a**e to get to the bolt in question. I ended up loosening the cable to the back of the alternator but remember to take the fuse out before playing!!!

                            Thanks Paul,

Make me feel better it is not just me! When you say you loosened the cable did you disconnect it from the alternator (must be a plug?) or did you just loosen the cable clamps near the nut?

                            Cheers,
                            James

...loosened the cable claps - just enough to be able to give me enough room to get in there. I don't know why they designed it like this!!!
