NW, What to look for when buying.

    HI Guys.

X Pajero owner here, ive been away for a long time and thinking of coming back.

I think im looking at the NW, Possibly Diesel, Auto or Manual (not yet decided).
Ive looked through the forum to find as much info as possible and now im going to bug you guys.

Is the 3.2 Diesel engine the same used on all the gen 4s, Any major issues $$$ with them?
I seen something about issues with the DPF, Do i need to worry about this? Costly ?
I also seen something about rust on the doors?

Do the timing Belts need changing ?
Valve adjustment ? how Regular? (if so is this an easy DIY)
I Seen something about problematic fuel pumps?

Any other things i should know about?
Any reason i should or should not go for this model?
    Auto or Manual?
This will be my first diesel, Ive always worked on my own cars but never owned a diesel , so this will be a little scary for me as i dont know much about them.
I need my arms and legs twisted so i can make a decision.

    Thanks Guys

Think MM dropped the manual in the NW.

Basically the same but with Common Rail Injection.

I seen something about issues with the DPF,

    No DPF in the NW.

Do i need to worry about this? Costly ?

I also seen something about rust on the doors?

Think that was fixed in the NW.

Do the timing Belts need changing ?

    No belts. Has chain.

Valve adjustment ? how Regular? (if so is this an easy DIY)

MM say check every 30,000. Ours has done over 300,000K and had 3 adjustments. Takes MM around 4 hours to adjust being common rail.

I Seen something about problematic fuel pumps?

Totally different fuel pump to the previous model.

Any other things i should know about?

Like all late model diesels make sure it has been serviced on time.

Any reason i should or should not go for this model?

    No reason at all.

    Auto or Manual?

As above. Don't think MM had them with a manual box.

This will be my first diesel,

Only available in diesel. MM dropped the petrol in OZ.

Ive always worked on my own cars but never owned a diesel , so this will be a little scary for me as i dont know much about them.
I need my arms and legs twisted so i can make a decision.

    Thanks Guys
    Happy shopping.

There's a known rust issue in the top of the doors in NT's. It was supposed to be fixed in the NW's but mine had rust in the top corners on both rear doors and the passenger door. It's been fixed through warranty and appeared to be surface rust, possibly because of poor and/or insufficient paint coverage from new.

        Hi Jim

Manual is an option in a NW. We have a MY13 VRX manual, was one of the last available in Aust. I'm pretty sure they were more common in the lower spec models. Depends on personal preference I guess but we have only ever owned one auto vehicle and will never have one again. The box in ours is very smooth and great to drive.

          Re gearboxes -

I think I must have 1 of the very last manuals - about mid 2015 NX.

Manual or Auto? It depends a lot on where and how you drive. I have a manual NW (I hate autos), and if I was buying another diesel Pajero, I would seriously consider an auto. Reason is that in city traffic, I am constantly changing down the gears. The clutch and gearbox are fine, but the engine is not that flexible. Even slowing down from 100 km/h to 60 (or even worse - 40 in school zones), it shudders away in 5th and i have to drop a gear or sometimes even 2 gears. This is not a major problem for me because of where I live and drive, but in congested areas, not as nice as an auto.

Certainly in sand or snow, an auto would kill a manual transmission car because the power deliivery is so much smoother.

I'd agree with the above. Have a 2012 NW manual and I think if I was buying again I would go Auto.

And well worth doing the EGR mod and catch can. Plenty of threads about those.
                Bash plates next.

Thank you all for your input.
At this stage i think im Looking at the Auto NW VRX.
The only thing that worries me is the issues with rust on the doors.
                    Is it really that bad?

I might be looking at a 2013 model vrx tomorrow with 47000 ks, asking price is $38,750.
The add says it comes with rwc, but reg expires at end if this mont.
                    What do you guys think?

No it isn't that bad. The rust problem was said to be overcome with the NW model. It wasn't every NS and NT that had rust either. The percentage of affected vehicles was very low.

If you are that concerned check under the rubber on top of the door. I would be more concerned about service history.

                        Hey guys.
What is the monocoque chassis like?
Does it look lile it will hold up long term?
Is it just as flimsy as your average sedan chassis or is it built with reinforsment?
Im not to concerned about the ability but more concerned about longevity.
I havent been able to find much info on it.
Will be going offroad but nothing to hardcore.
                        Cheers

Chassis is basically unchanged for a long time and there are zero problems that I'm aware of. It is very strong.

One thing I don't like about pajero chassis - there are so many nooks and crannies where mud, sand, or whatever you've been through, can hide. It requires thorough clean after a beach run if you care about it, which means you go under the car and get wet.
