    Sounds like fuel starvation.

    Fuel filter?

When you say almost empty how empty are we talking?

Running on empty can damage the fuel pumps

The common rail diesel injection system uses a high pressure pump that takes more diesel than the engine needs and pressurises it to a very very high pressure. The diesel that is not used in the injection process is returned to the fuel tank, but it is at an elevated temperature, it is mixed with the diesel in the tank where is cooled down, ready for reuse.

Problem is, as the tank level reduces the fuel in the tank gets progressively hotter and hotter, rcombine this with high ambient temperatures and the fuel temperature further increases. The fuel injection system detects the fuel temperature and if it is too high then the engine ECU reduces the engine power.

Therefore it is recommended you do not use fuel below the low warning light condition unles you are have very low ambient temperatures or it is an emergency. Apparently you can do damage to your injectors and fuel pump by running regularly on low fuel levels. A set of injectors and fuel pump will cost about $10,000 to replace.

Some vehicles have return fuel coolers, I am not sure if the Pajero has one or could even be fitted with RFC.

If you do not have the problem first thing in the morning when the vehicle has been standing overnight and the fuel is cool or when the tank fuel level is not low, then this could be the cause of your problems.

Two possibilities with the fuel starvation issue:
          1 Air leak
          2 Blocked filter

If the air leak is a problem, it will manifest itself when the car is stopped over night or for a longish period of time. This is because the main filter and most of the pipeworkis located above the level of the fuel in the tank and therefore is under slight vacuum all teh time, including when the engine is stopped. When it is running, the fuel pump may have enough pull to overcome a slight air leak and you would only know about it when the engine is stopped for a while. The car will be hard to start until the air is purged through the injectors.

If it starts OK, it could be the filter problem. Easiest check is the main filter - if that is OK or reasonably new, the pre-filter as suggested above is a likely culprit.
