Why fit a pre-cleaner?
An engine's air filter doesn't trap all the dust that enters the air intake. It will trap the vast majority of the dust, but a small percentage will get through. In normal conditions, travelling on bitumen, the total amount of dust entering the intake is small, and the small percentage that passes through the air filter is negligible.
In dusty conditions typical of Australia's outback roads much more dust will enter the air intake, and the small percentage of that dust that makes its way through the air filter is a more significant amount. More dust arrives at the air filter, more dust passes through the air filter.
